Embargo Information Sam Houston State University Thesis and Dissertation 2019

2 What is an Embargo? An embargo essentially allows your document to be withheld from being published in SHSU’s institutional repository and on PROQUEST, where it would be available for the public to see. This allows the student time to seek publication in other journals or patents for their information.

3 Do I Need an Embargo? An embargo might be right for you if:
You are seeking patents You wish to publish work through a traditional press that considers open access publication to be equivalent to prior publication You have published material from your work that does not allow open access release for a certain period of time You need to protect sensitive data or information You may at some point publish the information elsewhere, but are not yet sure. You have research that is ongoing

4 What Types of Embargoes are There?
1 Year Holds the document from publication for 1 year For those who are thinking about publishing their documents or parts of their documents in another journal The document will be published one year after your graduation date. 2 Year Holds the document from publication for 2 years For those who are planning to publish their document other places or are waiting to publish their document. The document will be published 2 years after your graduation date.

5 Which Embargo is Right For Me?
First, an embargo is not required. You can publish your document at the time of your graduation, no embargo needed. Second, if you are unsure if you need an embargo, consult with your Chair on the topic. If you plan on patenting any information in your document, you would want a 2 year embargo. If you plan on publishing part or all of your document in a journal, you should select a 1 year hold. If you are unsure of your plans on publishing the document, but you may pursue publication, we suggest selecting a 2 year hold. If the research in your document is ongoing and will be published in the future, you would want a 2 year embargo.

6 Do I Have to Have an Embargo to Publish Outside the University?
The university has nonexclusive distribution rights to your document. In other words, even if your document is published through the SHSU Institutional Repository you still have all rights to it, including publication.

7 Permanent Embargo Documents with this type of embargo are never published electronically by the University. It will never be available to the public. This embargo is for those who wish to publish their document in it’s entirety, such as a book or novel. A physical copy is kept in closed stacks. A digital copy is kept, but never available to the public. Students need permission (written or ) from the Dean of Graduate Studies to obtain this embargo

8 How to get an Embargo Discuss your intentions for you document with your Chair or advisor Decide on which embargo (if any) is right for your document Select your choice of embargo during your Vireo submission (Permanent embargo will have other instructions)
