7 NIST FY 2017 Topics - Collaboration and Partnerships - Data Modeling - Precision Measurements - Systems

8 NIST FY 2017 Subtopics Modeling and Simulation Analysis for Manufacturing Systems Atomic Vapor Cell Technology for Electric-Field Metrology Innovative Manufacturing of Nanoscale Calibration Spheres Multichannel, Chemically Precise X-ray Pulse Processor Quantum-based Compact Programmable Primary Thermometer Superconducting RF Filters for Advanced Signal Processing An Automated System for Firearm Evidence Identifications Digital Data Structure Understanding Tools Facilitating Security, Reliability, and Privacy in Networked Internet of Things (IoT) Devices

9 How to Submit a Proposal to NIST
- Solicitation available at grants.gov (links on and sbir.gov) - Start early Read solicitation and follow instructions - Ask questions 8

10 Proposal Evaluation - Step 1
Those proposals that pass administrative screening are evaluated by NIST subject-matter experts for: 1. The soundness of the technical approach to the proposed research. 2. The likelihood the proposed effort will result in significant results leading to a product within the subtopic. 3. The likelihood the proposed approach will contribute toward the field of study of the subtopic. 4. Qualifications of the proposed principal/key investigators, supporting staff, and consultants as they relate to accomplishing the proposed research effort.

11 Proposal Evaluation - Step 2
Those proposals that are highly ranked in Step 1 are evaluated by a NIST-wide panel for (Phase I only): 1. Economic impact 2. SBIR Program priorities (manufacturing, energy efficiency, woman-owned, minorities, HUBZones, etc.) NIST awards are cooperative agreements.

12 NIST SBIR Awards by Year/Phase

13 Success Story – High Precision Devices (Boulder, CO) New Tool for Breast Cancer Screening
The new breast phantom consists of two components. The one at left is designed to provide a standard for measuring proton spin relaxation time, which varies with different kinds of tissue. The one at right provides references for imaging diffusion Photo Credit: NIST/PML
