Changes at residue 82 of the Ebola virus (EBOV) glycoprotein (GP) enhance entry into human cells by altering dependence on host factors. Several studies now implicate an A82V change in the EBOV GP as enhancing viral entry into human cells. Wang et al. (2017) now demonstrate that A82V alters the dependence of GP on host factors, including cathepsins and NPC-1, to facilitate entry into human cells.
