OA Knee Exercise and Lifestyle
Programme PILOT

Background
The Exercise and Lifestyle Programme (ELP) was developed in line with clinical guidelines for the management of Knee Osteoarthritis (OA). Funding was identified from reallocation of money from Orthopaedic cost savings. The project involved collaborative working between the SBUHB and the National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS)

Methods
90 patients seen by the Musculoskeletal Clinical Assessment Service matched the inclusion criteria. The intervention period was a 12 week programme.
Patients were all given an education session delivered at their local Leisure centre.
Clinical Outcomes collected at baseline/week 12/and 6 months from ELP completion
Inclusion Criteria
Mild to Moderate knee arthritis (recent X-ray within last 6/12)
BMI more than 30
No surgical pathway indicated (instability/severe OA)
No unstable medical conditions not suitable for group exercise or diet interventions
Patient is Motivated to make lifestyle changes
Able to walk independently 100m and manage a flight of stairs.

Intervention
Patients all received an OA Knee Education talk.
All patients completed the appropriate outcomes.
Patients were then given the option to choose from two interventions.
On going Clinical Support offered to all patients
12 weeks of Full intervention: Included 2 weekly group exercise sessions
(designed specifically for patients with OA knee) and 8 weekly diet education session.
12 weeks of Self management: Patients were given Arthritis
UK education booklets on Osteoarthritis with exercise and diet information.

Conclusion
Full ELP intervention showed a Significant Improvement in all outcomes measured
Self Management Showed a Mild Improvement in all outcomes.

Future Plans
Including the patient Clinical assessment/Education session/Outcome collection into ONE single patient contact. Aligning outcomes with national PROMS.
All delivered at Clinical setting not Leisure. Integrate ELP clinics into MSK service to improve patient compliance and cost efficiency.
Business case in progress to offer a 1000 yearly ELP places across Swansea Bay UHB.
