2 Outline Siena College Siena’s Education Program Siena’s Noyce Project
First Summer Program and it’s Powerful Field Experience Preparing Mathematics Students to teach Computer Science Innovative school mathematics project

3 About Siena College Liberal Arts College
Franciscan and Catholic Tradition Approx Undergraduates Approx Science/Math Majors Loudonville, New York Albany-Schenectady-Troy

4 Siena’s Education Program
No Major in Education Certification Programs for Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, and Spanish NCATE accredited Approximately 25 Siena graduates per year earn certification ~ 180 in mathematics during the past 30 years Two supervisors (clinical and academic) for student-teaching The Education Professions Committee (EPC) 1990 “Gas Mileage” “I don’t want to be a doctor.”

5 Siena’s Noyce Program Motivation
Improving mathematics and science teaching/learning in high-needs schools Lack of Computer Science in Schools Siena’s Strengths Mission – “commitment to building a world that is more just, peaceable, and humane.” Strong undergraduate programs in the sciences Numbers of majors Undergraduate Research experiences Well respected education certification program NCATE approved Extensive field experiences Commitment to serving high-needs schools Close relationship with academic departments and dual supervision Methods course is connected to student-teaching placements Well regarded program in mathematics education Example 180 math teachers in 30 years – 90%+ still teaching

6 First Summer Program AM - Scholars took EDUC PM - Schenectady HS hours in classes and hours tutoring so an 80 hour field experience Seminar on Wednesdays

7 First Summer Program 1. Did you graduate from a high school like Schenectady? 50% below the poverty line 55% high school graduation rate 2. When you first considered a career in teaching, did you think you would want to teach in a school like Schenectady? 3. Did you have any concerns at the start of this experience? 4. What did you find? 5. What were the students like?

8 First Summer Program 6. What did you learn during the summer program? How might this experience shape your career?

17 First Summer Program Since 2000, Siena College has had 65 traditional undergraduate mathematics majors earn secondary teaching certification. Six of these graduates (less than 10%) are teaching in high needs districts. Participation in the Noyce summer program has resulted in six of seven STEM majors being very interested in teaching in a high needs district for the first teaching position.

18 Which STEM field has the highest predicted job growth
????????????????? Which STEM field has the highest predicted job growth? Over the last twenty years, which STEM field is the only one that has seen a decline in the number of students taking its courses?

19 COMPUTER SCIENCE How many students start 9th grade each year
COMPUTER SCIENCE How many students start 9th grade each year? How many graduate from HS each year? How many take an AP Calculus exam? How many take the AP Biology exam? How many take the AP Statistics exam? How about the AP Computer Science exam?

20 COMPUTER SCIENCE How many students start 9th grade each year
COMPUTER SCIENCE How many students start 9th grade each year? ~4,000,000 How many graduate from HS each year? ~3,000,000 How many take the AP Calculus exam? ~ 340,000 How many take the AP Biology exam? ~ 180,000 How many take the AP Statistics exam? ~ 140,000 How about the AP computer science exam? ~ 22,000

21 CS 10K Project Goal: Get engaging, rigorous, computing curricula into computing courses in 10,000 high schools, taught by 10,000 well-prepared teahers by 2016.
