1 Teaching reading and phonics at Charlton Kings Infants’ School

2 Aims of the Session: To understand how reading is taught in the EYFS and KS1. To understand the changes in our teaching of phonics. To identify ways in which you can support your child's learning at home.

3 Reading in EYFS: Book Corner books Rhyme of the Week Shared reading as whole class Guided comprehension School library lessons Visit the local library Daily story time Individual reading School reading books – the comprehension of the story is just as important as the decoding.

4 Reading in KS1: Shared reading as whole class – linked to foundation subjects Daily story time Guided comprehension sessions in groups with written responses School library Visit the local library School reading books – the comprehension of the story is just as important as the decoding. Individual reading for some pupils in order to            develop fluency. Using a range of stimulating texts within              choice choice and challenge.

5 A phonics lessons 1 new grapheme-phoneme-correspondence (GPC) covered over two lessons Lesson 1 (whole class teaching) Revisit and Review Use of flashcards/blending on IWB Re-reading word bank, sentences Spelling previous sounds- Teach Reading words using sound buttons Spelling words reinforcing handwriting Reading sentences together Writing sentences together Lesson 2 -Phonics folders are taken home to recap with parents. -Continuous provision activities

6 Assessment Spelling : Friday assessments – spellings lists of words containing the two phonemes taught that week. CEWs are practised at this time. Reading: Termly assessment –completed 1:1 Results out of /40 with notes of specific gaps noted

7 CEWs CEW Spelling lists given out in KS1 at start of each term – results reported to parents following end of term assessment Spelling of CEWs form part of English activities

9 Home learning Phonics folders – review learning each week – practise additional sentences on reverse of sheet Learning spellings Daily reading – record in reading diary (1 page each with parent/child) Sharing stories together to develop the love of reading and discuss vocabulary Pre-teaching topic vocabulary Links to website – children/useful links
