1 The 60’s Hippie Movement

2 BACKGROUND Philosophy- Society was too screwed up
to fix, so drop out and form a new society based on their values.

3 The Hippie “Utopia”- The perfect society would be
based on peace & love. It would be a society where the community came before the individual.

4 Nicknames- The Love Generation & The Flower Children

5 Hangouts- Many major cities had them, but Haight-Ashbury in San
Francisco (Hippie capital) & the East Village in N.Y.C. were the biggies.

6 1967- Called the Summer of Love.
It was the peak of the Hippie Movement.

7 Sexual Freedom- More than one partner was ok. Didn’t have to be married to have sex.

8 Drugs- Their drugs of choice were pot & LSD.
Many felt you could have a Religious like experience by taking certain drugs. Saying: Dope was Good, Drugs were Bad.

9 Typical Characteristics-
White Middle Class, Educated, 17-25 years old. The Hippie Look- Since they didn’t care about material things, they often looked dirty. Worn out & Ethnic clothing was in. Long Hair was the look!

10 THE MAINSTREAM’S REACTION
At First- Outraged, thought the Hippies were disgusting un-Americans “Plastic Hippies”- Part time Hippie. Many dressed The part on weekends, but weren’t ready to drop out.

11 Eventually- A lot of the Hippie culture was
absorbed into the mainstream. The Hippie look & slang are two examples.

12 DECLINE OF THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT
Reason #1- Commercialism, the mainstream started making money off the Hippie name. Reason #2- Hangouts became too dangerous. Rise in crime & harder drugs.

13 What did many Hippies do?
“Flocked to nature”. They set up communes in the mountains, woods, and on farms.

14 Impact of this- It reduced their influence on the younger generation in the cities since they were no longer there.

15 By the end of the 60s / early 70s-
MOST Hippies had filtered right back into mainstream society.
