1 Year 11 Information Evening Mathematics

2 The 2019 Maths results were strong, continuing the
trend of the last 5 years. On average Sawston pupils achieve half a grade higher in Maths than in schools nationally. We are preparing students well for the increased challenge of the papers.

3 Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1)
Our exam board is: Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Mathematics (1MA1)

4 What have we learnt about the new 9-1 exams?
Students need to have exam stamina and resilience. Students need a deep understanding of the content. It isn’t enough to simply learn the methods by rote.

5 The Chief examiners report states that….
Candidates need to organise their work better. Number facts (e.g. times tables) need to be ingrained in a pupils long term memory, freeing up space in the working memory. In shorter questions, candidates need to show all stages of working, however trivial, particularly on the calculator papers. Candidates’ recall of essential formulae was not always successful. General weaknesses still persist in handling and converting units.

6 Which Tier? ……… Higher or Foundation
There is a false perception that a ‘pass’ is easier to achieve on the higher tier.

7 For candidates expected to achieve grade 4 or 5, there is ample opportunity on the Foundation papers for them to show what they can do, and to work through a range of challenging questions.

8 The Higher papers are designed for candidates expected to achieve the highest grades with half the questions testing grade 7+ (A grade ) material.
