1 PathTracker Smartphone System for Detecting Bacteria and Viruses

2 Goal To develop an inexpensive (~$10) smartphone clip-on detection instrument and silicon-based assay cartridge for viral quantitation of HIV-1 performed within 30 minutes upon a single droplet of fingerstick-derived whole blood that is nearly as simple to use as a common glucose test

People undergoing anti-retroviral therapy have to be frequently tested to assure that their drug regimen is working A smartphone-based system would facilitate Tracking of test results and reporting trends to the physician Reduce cost Remove need for patient to visit the clinic But there are MANY useful applications of the technology: Food and water safety Wide variety of human pathogens (flu, strep, urinary tract infection, …) Animal-related pathogens For our project goals, we don’t need to work with actual HIV
