Construction Industry
Impact of Silicones 2016

What Are Silicones? Silicones are a family of specialty, high-performance materials. The silicone family includes siloxanes and silanes, all of which are widely used in thousands of products Due to their molecular structure, silicones can be manufactured in many forms including: solids liquids semi-viscous pastes greases oils rubber Silicones have an exceptional breadth of chemical and physical properties. Silicones are flexible and resist moisture, chemicals, heat, cold and ultraviolet radiation. Products made with silicones take on these and other important properties so they are more stable, more aesthetically pleasing, easier to use or apply, and longer lasting. Construction Industry 2016

Industry Silicones manufacturing alone directly employs about 30,000 people worldwide, evenly distributed between Europe, the Americas, and Asia Significantly greater numbers apply to downstream employment – it is estimated that up to 14 million employees may be involved in some form of economic activity that involves silicone products across the globe. 1.7 million people in Europe 2.3 million people in the Americas 10 million people in Asia Construction Industry 2016

Construction A total of 550,000 tons of silicone product was sold to the construction sector in 2013, generating sales of $2.2 billion worldwide The global construction sector had a market value of about $8.7 trillion in 2012 The construction sector employs a growing share of workers across the world: 8% of employed persons in the EU 4% of employed persons in the US 10% of employed persons in Japan 9% of employed persons in China Construction Industry 2016

APPLICATIONS Construction Industry 2016

Construction Silicones are used as sealants, protective coatings for exterior surfaces, and in production of building insulation due to the fact that they are/can: Durable Resistant to chemical pollution Weather resistant Absorb movement Adhere to a variety of materials (glass, ceramics, wood, masonry, metals, plastics) Using silicone additives in construction emits 13 times less GHG emissions Construction Industry 2016

Construction Silicone sealants, adhesives, and coatings make construction materials work better and last longer Silicone coatings or additives improve water resilience – they can reduce uptake of water by up to 80% compared to traditional building materials By using products made with silicone, you generate on average 9 times less greenhouse gases than were emitted during manufacturing and disposal of that product Silicone additives are added in the manufacturing process of polyurethane foams used to insulate buildings, appliances, and equipment. The global polyurethane foam market was valued at $46.8 billion in 2014, and was expected to reach $72.2 billion by 2020 Construction Industry 2016
