The use of a glucose analog (18F-deoxyglucose) and positron emission tomography images of the left ventricular wall of the heart of a normal subjects (left). The diffuse pattern of tracer uptake documents the absence of perfusion defects; quantification of these images measures insulin-mediated glucose uptake. In the insulin-resistant subject (right), tracer uptake is also diffuse but uniformly reduced, thereby demonstrating myocardial insulin resistance. Bernard Zinman et al.
