ER encircles mitochondria at sites of mitochondrial fission. INF2 that is associated with ER then stimulates polymerization of actin, which provides the force for partial constriction of the organelle. Drp1 assembles into spirals and cylinders at the constricted site, where it drives more constriction of the organelle and mitochondrial fission.
