1 FUTURE CITIES Co-operative Research Centre

2 $5 billion boost to the economy
FUTURE CITIES Co-operative Research Centre Invest for Impact Improved land use and infrastructure efficiency ($A0.9B) Enhanced industry productivity ($A2.8B) Commercialisation of new smart-city products & services with export opportunities in growing global urban markets ($A1.3B) $5 billion boost to the economy Purpose of the slide = highlighting the size of the prize and the areas where the benefits of the CRC are derived 2/10/2019

3 Meeting the challenge of Urban Growth
+ Our big cities are growing in area which puts stress on infrastructure, service delivery and the environment More than 11 million extra people will need accommodation in Australia to 2050 – Double the average growth rate across the OECD. + Australia’s three-tiered governance structure can make it challenging to consistently deliver liveable places Communities are increasingly disappointed by their experience of growth + Sector-led planning can lead to uncoordinated outcomes for communities Purpose of the slide = describing the context/ challenge 2/10/2019 Infrastructure Australia, Planning Liveable Cities: A place-based approach to sequencing infrastructure and growth, Dec 2018

4 Integration is key to economic and liveability benefits
Planning Design Construction Operation Integration is key to economic and liveability benefits Supply chain integration driving productivity gains Sector integration unlocking efficiency and amenity Housing Affordability Water Waste Congestion and other amenity issues Construction Purpose of the slide Introducing the need for integration and the integration challenge/opportunity that the CRC is tackling Highlighting that the CRC will operate as an integrator and not as a siloed sectoral CRC Energy Transport Health Education 2/10/2019

5 Major economic potential unlocked through supply-chain integration & “smart” products & services
Basis for joined-up land-use planning and service delivery Industry led research to commercialise Australian innovation Capture A$100B smart city market opportunity Create better cities and regions A$1.5B/yr from planning and zoning reform Future proofed design and construction Reduced congestion costs 30% reduction in construction industry waste ~$A30b/yr Improve productivity of existing assets Boost international competitiveness Purpose of the slide – validating that industry really thinks that this is an issue that needs to be solved and not just dreamed up by a bunch of academics 2/10/2019

6 NEW PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Harnessing research and emerging technologies to develop new products & services Integrated, data-driven, evidence-based approach for city planning and infrastructure DATA Technology service companies Analytics & AI Performance monitoring Digital twinning & modelling Data platforms Technology companies IoT Remote sensors New material NEW PRODUCTS Digital services & products New digital platforms New products NEW PRODUCTS & SERVICES Purpose of the slide – illustrating a digitally enabled city and the potential of digital to empower the ecosystem Urban asset-centred organisations Industry Developers Utilities: Energy, water & waste Transport & logistics Service providers: Health, Education Planners Governments Cities Communities 2/10/2019

7 Who’s involved in the Future Cities CRC?
Product & service providers Industry peak bodies Property Industry Utilities Government at all levels Universities and research providers Purpose of the slide – Illustrate the diversity of stakeholders (complex system) and that the CRC has the necessary representation 2/10/2019

8 Property sector collaborating for triple-bottom line infrastructure innovation
Faster approvals, social licence to operate, greater certainty and reduced development risk Collaboration on emerging technologies for reducing construction and operating costs Manage cyber security/data risks and privacy Living Lab innovation testing/validation sites at city-scale Consumer engagement/market insights Property Industry Purpose of the slide – Highlight how the CRC can provide a sandpit environment for the property sector to innovate (contrast with the slow innovation and risk of innovation in the status-quo) 2/10/2019

9 Product & service providers
Industry and research collaborations for rapid innovation, product development and market validation Open-data, open-standards and sharing-platforms for rapid innovation of new products and services Access to skills, sharing in research outcomes and innovation funding support Collaboration and product validation in Living Lab environments at city-wide scale Partnering and positioning for access to $529b global smart city market Product & service providers Purpose of the slide - Highlight how CRC Intellectual Property can underpin new industry 2/10/2019

10 Government at all levels
Supports government priorities for better cities Strengthening of the National Cities Performance Framework and progress tracking Efficient service delivery from access to better tools including improved data and scenario analysis Jobs and growth through innovation with open-data and digital sharing platforms Better community outcomes and city amenity (reduced congestion, affordability, liveability) Lead by example with government asset portfolio Evidence-base to assist in complex planning challenges • Strategic-foresight to support policy for efficiency, greater equity and affordability Government at all levels Purpose of the slide – showing how the CRC research will support Government needs 2/10/2019

11 Benefiting communities by increasing city resilience and liveability
Facilitate deeper more inclusive engagement with planning and infrastructure building & alleviate urban growth “fatigue” • Improved transparency and quality of infrastructure planning, decision-making and more responsive service delivery • Improved access, affordability and safety Better community outcomes and city amenity (reduced congestion, affordability, liveability, heat island mitigation) Jobs through innovation Community Purpose of the slide – showing how the CRC research will support Community needs 2/10/2019

12 Harnessing digital technologies to transform urban service delivery,
efficiency and sustainability AI and IoT solutions for more efficient and sustainable asset planning and management Integrated infrastructure planning to support regulatory determinations Scenario analysis for increased resilience, and strategic insights Access to diverse high-quality integrated data, in standardised formats • Improved service delivery and customer engagement Utilities Purpose of the slide – showing how the CRC research will support Utility needs 2/10/2019

13 Capability and Capacity Building
Building the digitally-oriented skilled workforce needed for successful city transformation • 78 HDRs in high impact end-user driven research • Internship program: helping start-ups and SMEs • Post-professional and micro-credentialling through professional bodies e.g. CPD programs in Cyber security and data governance, Digital tools for planners • Vocational training through industry peak bodies Capability and Capacity Building Purpose of the slide – sell the capability building we are doing 2/10/2019

16 Experienced governance and management teams to deliver research with impacts
Governance by an experienced board and management team with proven expertise, and knowledge of industry, research and government. Constituted as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, governed by an independent skills-based board selected by the members of the CRC. A Research Advisory Committee, with a mix of independent and participant members, will review research project proposals submitted by members, and provide recommendations to the board. Structured participation arrangements tiered for effective collaboration: 8 Major partners contributing ≥$1.6m sign as Core Participant members with full voting rights. 43 Partners contributing at least $0.25m sign-up as Supporting Participants, represented through the Industry Advisory Council (IAC). The Industry Advisory Council (IAC), will provide the forum to engage all end- users. All Participants supported by an experienced Partner Engagement Manager. Focused stakeholder sub-groups will be created to maximise engagement 2/10/2019
