4 NSF Major Research Instrumentation
Very competitive University is limited to three proposals Based on amount requested Limited to (2) Track 1 proposals: $100K to <$1M Limited to (1) Track 2 proposal: $1M to $4M Important to make it clear which track is being pursued Track 2 proposals require significant, novel changes Funding chances improve if the project: Benefits a variety of individuals Strong support from units (matching funds, space) Long term plan for support at end of NSF grant Meets strategic need

5 NSF Major Research Instrumentation
Do not pursue MRI if you have another option Small requests can be done within a program Largest requests need to appeal to a variety of NSF directorates Need to explain value in a way to appeal to non-experts Recent Awards (with abstracts) Map of Recent Awards (with dollar amounts)

6 NSF MRI Internal Competition
Necessary Components : Project Description (2-3 pages) PI Biosketch / CV (Up to 2 pages) Budget Overview (up to 1 page) Track 1 or Track 2 designation Important Dates: Internal Deadline: October 8th, 2019 NSF Deadline: January 20th, 2020 Online Application: colorado.edu/researchinnovation/nsf-major- research-instrumentation-mri-program

7 Dr. Juliet Gopinath Associate Professor, Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering NSF MRI Recipient 2016 NSF MRI Recipient Professor Gopinath works at the intersection of electrical engineering, physics and materials science, with a focus on lasers and optical devices. Dr. Gopinath and her Co-PI’s received a NSF MRI for her project Acquisition of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Dry Etching System for Highly Controlled Etching of Chalcogenides and Related Compounds. Dr. Gopinath and her Co- PI’s also received a 2019 NSF MRI for her project MRI Consortium: Development of Fiber-coupled Stimulated Emission Depletion Microscopy (STED)

8 Dr. Won Park Professor, Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering Fellow, Materials Science & Engineering NSF MRI Recipient Dr. Park's research is centered at discovering new optical phenomena and applications using nanoscale materials and structures and currently has three major thrusts: energy harvesting, nonlinear optical devices and nanomedicine. Dr. Park and his Co-PI’s received a 2016 NSF MRI for his project Acquisition of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Dry Etching System for Highly Controlled Etching of Chalcogenides and Related Compounds.
