2 WELCOME! Thank you for joining us in this important partnership that results in an extraordinary and uncommon education for your children.

3 Goals for this presentation:

7 Big picture goal The King Community will be equipped to take an active role in fostering a caring, inclusive learning environment.

9 Every child will feel safe, secure, cared for and welcome
WHY? Brain research and experience tells us that learning can only occur when we feel safe and comfortable. HOW? Implementing the Responsive Classroom framework with components such as Morning Meeting, Academic Choice, Quiet Time, Brain Breaks and Closing Circle. Heather

10 Each child (and staff member) begins the year with Hopes and Dreams

11 Then Class Constitutions are created, ratified, signed and posted for the year.

Cooperation Assertiveness Responsibility Empathy Self-Control **These will be the themes of our assemblies throughout the year

14 Every child will be invested in their learning
All King students will be active participants in their learning. WHY? The more invested a person is in learning, the greater the learning. HOW? Every King child sets goals, identifies strategies for reaching those goals, monitors the goals, and reflects on the goals throughout the year. Students keep their information in a Data Binder.

16 Every child will be proficient in reading
WHY? It is our belief and moral imperative that all people deserve a productive, quality, meaningful life that can only be realized by being literate. HOW? Implementing the Essential Practices in Literacy as well as the Core 5 online Lexia program Heather-- Essential Practices in Literacy: most effective practices used for reading instruction in K-5, consistent statewide, practices with greatest impact. Each of the 10 practices are proven to have a positive impact on literacy development, similar to a “standard of care” in medical practice.

18 Third Grade Reading Law
What is the WHY? The 3rd Grade Reading Law is a State effort to boost reading achievement, and was signed into Michigan law in October 2016.

20 Parent Climate Survey Data
Parent Survey said King Elementary School’s areas of weakness include: 16% of parents disagreed with being aware of district’s policies and procedures for responding to inequitable treatment or acts of bias for students, staff, and families. 15% of parents disagreed their students are challenged by their schoolwork. 13% of parents disagreed this school meets the needs of all students. 11% of parents disagreed with feeling comfortable reporting inequitable treatment or acts of bias that may take place at my child’s school. 10% of parents disagreed with students receive the mental health support they need. *265 participants

21 Parent Climate Survey Data
Parent Survey said King Elementary School’s areas of strength include: 99% of parents said they are informed about school-sponsored activities, such as Lit Nights. 96% of parents said staff members and families treat each other with respect. 89% of parents said their child was treated fairly regardless of background or differences. 89% of parents said administrators clearly communicate the school mission and vision. 89% of parents said school respects and values input provided by families. 87% of parents said that there is a teacher or other staff member children can go for help with a school problem. *265 participants

You have our commitment that we will devote 100% of our time and energy to improving the quality of this school, by: *knowing your child(ren) *being in all classrooms each week *providing teachers with meaningful feedback to help them continue to grow *advocating for additional support in the area of mental health for children. *modeling bold leadership in our words and actions
