1 WHS PHYSICAL EDUCATION

2 LOCKS AND LOCKERS Students are responsible to secure
Students are assigned a small box locker for overnight storage but must provide their own padlock. Long lockers are to be used only during class time. Students are responsible to secure their belongings in locked lockers. Ask your child if they currently have a lock and locker!

3 CLOTHING For safety, personal hygiene, ease of performance and social decency all students are required to change from street (school) clothes for class. The following recommended attire for physical education has been established: Sneakers: must be tied securely on feet. Socks Shorts T- Shirt Sweatshirt Sweatpants Figure 1.1

4 CLOTHING – continued Clothing and accessories that may NOT be worn in or brought to PE class for safety reasons are: Jeans/pants or shorts with belt loops Belts Hats, I-Pods, Headphones, Cell Phones, Jewelry Torn, frayed, dirty or OBSCENE clothing Figure 1.2

5 FOOD & DRINKS Students may not bring food or drinks into the gymnasiums or locker rooms.

6 MEDICAL EXCUSES PARENT’S NOTE
Students may be excused from active participation by a parent's note for up to five (5) consecutive days. Students must stay in class and observe for the class period. Students may NOT use this class as a study period. Students excused from regular physical education classes with a parents’ note MAY NOT: practice/play with their sports team. participate in any intramural programs, off-season conditioning programs, or any school sponsored athletic teams.

7 MEDICAL EXCUSES Physician’s Note
Any medical problem requiring six (6) or more days off (long term) must be covered by a Physician's note and must be brought to: 1. the school nurse 2. then to their Physical Education teacher for a written assignment.

8 MEDICAL EXCUSES Students in this situation must:
report to their PE teacher everyday for attendance purposes will be directed to the MPR (quiet study) to work on a prescribed assignment will have approximately 1 week to complete this assignment will send it electronically to their Physical Education teacher for grading (through Google classroom) If students are on a Physician assigned medical for more than one week, additional assignments will be given for each week out of class. Students will be graded on their written work and will receive credit for this course. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be given a zero.

9 INJURIES IN CLASS Students are required to report accidents and/or injuries to the teacher during the class period, however insignificant they may be. This procedure insures the proper administration of first aid measures and results in prompt and accurate reporting of accident/injury facts.

10 Students will not be given the opportunity to make up cuts.
GRADING Student’s grades in Physical Education are determined by the following rubric: Participation 50% of unit grade Skill Development % of unit grade Cognitive Assessment 25% of unit grade Students will not be given the opportunity to make up cuts. 60% of adults do not receive the recommended amount of physical activity. 25% of adults are not physically active at all. Physical activity is more prevalent in men, more affluent and less educated individuals.

14 HEALTH EDUCATION Health Education is separate from physical education for grading purposes. 9th and 12th grade fall semester 10th and 11th grade spring semester. Figure 1.4

15 PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTIONS
Westfield High School Athletic Team Marching Band Cheerleading carry a full 9 period day without a free period. Freshman are not eligible for exemption in the 1st semester (fall) due to their requirement to take Project Adventure and Health. Sophomores are not eligible for exemption in the 2nd semester (spring) due to their requirement to take Driver’s Education and Health. Figure 1.5

16 2018-19 DEADLINES FOR FILING FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTIONS:
Deadline for Filing Exemptions Begin FALL /7/ /13/18 ICE H 11/1/ /5/18 BOWL/SWIM 11/12/18 11/15/18 WINTER /29/ /3/18 SPRING /7/ /11/19 All students must return to Physical Education class on the NEXT DAY after THEIR PERSONAL last contest. Practice is not considered part of a PE exemption after their last contest. FAILURE TO REPORT TO CLASS WILL BE CONSIDERED A CUT and disciplinary action will be assigned. Figure 1.6

17 Students may pick up applications in the Counseling Office or download the application on the Physical Education Website. If a student athlete has Health when the exemptions are due, and wishes to be exempt after that course has ended, they need to apply when the forms are due for that season. Fall- September deadline Winter- December deadline Spring- March deadline

18 PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXEMPTIONS
And injuries If an athlete who is exempt gets injured they will need to contact their PE teacher to start the Medical Excuse Program. Like any other medical they will bring their Dr. note to the nurse and give the slip to their teacher who will advise them how to do the assignment.
