1 Observer Standardisation Meeting
September 2019

2 Observer Training New paperwork and guidance book
New observer training Induction Mentoring

3 Common Themes What have been the main strengths of TLA that you have observed over the last year? What have been the main areas for development of TLA that you have observed?

4 Challenges for this year
Moving nearer towards outstanding provision Reminder of Ofsted Actions Promotion of British Values Aim for more than 90% of tutors to be observed Majority to be observed within Autumn term (regardless of date of last observation)

5 Target for completion Last year we completed 180 observations, resulting in 88% of tutors being observed This year we are aiming for more than 90% of tutors to be observed Majority to be observed within Autumn term (regardless of date of last observation)  Aiming for 75% by February half-term To enable this we will be monitoring how many observations have been planned for Following up each month on observations with no results

6 Changes Each provider will have a central OTLA record which contains all tutors and actions Actions from OLTA will be added to this by Kait Centres will then complete the action underneath this This will be audited by HA on a regular basis, and a reminder will be sent before this Action Review Forms – we will continue to generate these so that you can share the actions with the tutor and they can make notes.  We do not however wish these to be returned to us.  Any completed actions will be recorded on the central OTLA record

7 Standardisation Activity
We will be reviewing several observation reports, for each one (we will all have the same) please identify the following; The grade you would have awarded The strengths of practice The actions you would recommend to the tutor

8 Example 1 Grade: 1 Strengths
A very competent tutor whose experience shone through and supported all learners to achieve. Excellent examples of participation and high levels of enjoyment evidenced throughout Challenge for learners was excellent. Learners progress well from their different starting points and achieve or exceed expected standards Good involvement and active management of all learners ensured that they were focussed for the whole of the observed lesson. Tutor feedback to the learners throughout the lesson was excellent Very good formal recording of initial assessment and progress during this three week course. Excellent time management. Areas for Improvement – none Actions: To continue to share the good practice and skills with other tutors through the tutor hub and Tutor Facebook page. Demonstrate the pebble activity at the team meeting in September.

9 Example 2 Grade: 2 Strengths
Keen awareness of individual learners’ needs and personal mental health concerns Targeted questioning to challenge learners at an appropriate level A variety of teaching styles to accommodate all learners needs Excellent promotion of a supportive environment and relationships between peers and tutor. Adaption of session plan to meet the needs of individual learners and still maintain learning for all. Areas for improvement Although it was excellent practice to adapt the session to accommodate the needs of the learners, as a result it may have been more appropriate to alter the second activity which was another group discussion and instead either provide a different activity or paired work to keep learners engaged Actions Share good practice with other tutors. Punctuate whole group presentation/discussion with paired work or other activities to ensure a change of pace is maintained throughout the session in order to keep learners fully engaged.

10 Example 3 Grade: 3 Strengths
Learner engagement was good and the learner environment was productive, focused and calm. The quality of work produced by learners was of a very good standard. The learning environment was good and the room layout appropriate. Learner’s progress with the qualification is good. Leaner’s personal development through the 1:1 action plan process is well documented. Areas for improvement Preplanning and lesson planning for sessions requires improvement. The tutor had a lesson plan for the session, but it was not the correct one for the session being delivered. The tutor needs to make sure that he is fully prepares before lessons and particularly before an observation. Attendance requires improvement. Review tasks fully to ensure learning is shared and deepened. Ensure you are clear about the purpose of the lesson and share the aims and objectives at the start of the session and review these at the end of the session to ensure they have been achieved. Ensure you have a role during the session and are clear about what is expected during the session. Communication with other staff supporting you during the session. Example 3

11 Example 4 Grade – developmental Strengths
Effective planning of session to include a variety of activities including practical tasks and group work Clear links made at start to previous sessions and what learning outcomes are intended Good awareness of individual needs of learners with disabilities Areas requiring improvement Individual targets are always not specific and measurable LSA ‘s contributions are too obtrusive Learners need to be invited by name to respond to questions Opportunities to develop literacy are missed Example 4

12 Next Standarisation meeting
January 14th 2020 pm at Falcon House, Winchester Next observation training for new observers: Tuesday 7th January 1-4pm at Four Chimneys

13 Focus of OTLA for Autumn Term
Please pay particular attention to British Values and how this is being embedded or introduced This will mean that there will be more 1st session observations Focus for Spring term will be IMPACT – so last session will be more focused on
