1 Cardiovascular structure and function
Module 1- Anatomy and Physiology

2 Cardiovascular System
Used to deliver oxygen to working tissues Oxygen diffuses into blood from alveoli to capillaries Blood travels from lungs to heart Heart to peripheries Periphery to heart Heart to lungs Right ventricle pumps blood to lungs (pulmonary circulation) Left ventricle pumps blood to rest of body (systemic circulation)

3 Figure 1.9

4 Control of Cardiovascular System
Contraction of heart muscle is not voluntary It is controlled by the heart’s electrical conduction system Begins in the SA Node Through the atria Then the AV Node (delayed) Then the ventricles

5 Figure 1.11

6 Electrical Activity of the Heart
P wave is the depolarization of atria QRS Complex is the depolarization of the ventricles T wave is the repolarization of the ventricles Repolarization of atria is masked by QRS complex Contraction of heart chambers is called systole Relaxation of heart chambers is called diastole
