Online safety

In this GCSE year students will need to use the internet to study from accredited sites. The internet can be a great resource if used safely. In school, students’ access to websites is restricted and software will alert the safeguarding team if a student attempts to access restricted material.

Standard, factory settings for an iphone allow all explicit content
Standard, factory settings for an iphone allow all explicit content. To protect young people when they are using their phones, go into the setting screen and set up parental controls as shown at the end of the presentation.

Content – Keeping young people safe from harmful materials on the Internet Contact – Preventing our children from meeting inappropriate people and/or being groomed on the Internet Conduct – Avoiding children behaving inappropriately on the Internet What are we trying to protect young people from?

Content  Without parental controls, young people can see adult or extremist sites and those promoting harmful behaviours.

Contact If young people haven’t met their online “friends”, how do they who they are and if they have bad intentions? Online Grooming cases have increased by 700% since 2014.

Conduct Appreciating that once something is posted it is out of the control of the originator. The Police define the crime of “Malicious Communications” as an incident where someone sends a form of communication that is indecent or grossly offensive, threatening, or contains information which is false or believed to be false.  The purpose for sending it is to cause distress or anxiety to the person it is sent to.  An offence of Malicious Communications occurs as soon as the communication is sent, and does not even have to be received by the intended person.  It is the sending and intent of the offender which counts as an offence. Sending indecent images of anyone under 18 is an offence. Once a picture is out there, it cannot be taken back and it is very easily shared.
