2 4-H Prepares Youth for the Future
Leader Training

3 Icebreaker! “When I Grow Up I Want to Be…”
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? How did you decide what you wanted to be? Can you remember a person or event that influenced your job or career choice? What path did you take to get where you are today?

4 Understanding the Why…

5 Learning Outcomes Develop opportunities for youth to refine skills that will prepare them for the future. Identify ways to help youth explore, learn, practice, and experience possible careers. Share resources that can be used to support our work with 4-H youth.

6 4-H Career Readiness Framework

7 Find Your Passion Which do you have more of, things you like or things you don’t like to do? Why do you think that is? What things that you love to do are you good at? Why is it important to know what you like and dislike doing? Why is it important to know what you are good at doing? Why is it important to be enthusiastic about what you do? What jobs or careers might match what you love to do?

8 Targeting Life Skills Who can give me an example of a skill they have learned in 4-H? How did you learn it? Who can think of a skill that they think will help them in the future? What skills do you think you want to work on over the next year?

9 Who Can Help Me? What career would we like to explore?
What resources are available to help us explore this career? How can those resources help? How can we access these resources and when? How can we help youth connect their career interests to 4-H?

10 Name that Career The youth must try to correctly identify the career name using inquiry to identify the career. The facilitator may provide a list of possible questions to help identify the career and further exploration of the career. The facilitator should be prepared with facilitation questions In today’s training let’s consider the potential careers that could be used for this activity when done with youth? Adapted from Michigan State University Extension- 4-H Youth Development

11 4-H Learning Experience
Using knowledge gained, in groups plan a 4-H learning experience that includes a career readiness component. Report back How will you add these to your “toolbox” of ideas and incorporate into your club programming?

12

13 Accommodations List the steps, supports, resources, and accommodations that your program currently has in place. List strategies you have utilized to accommodate and allow ALL 4-H youth to fully and safely participate in programs or activities. Are there resources or supports that are needed to increase our ability to accommodate all youth?

14 Accommodations Adaptations: changes which allow an individual to gain access, achieve results, and reap the benefits of the activity Accommodations: enable an individual to benefit from the activity, accommodations do not alter the standards or expectations associated with the activity and are meant to reduce or eliminate the effects of a disability Modifications: change, lower, or reduce the expectations of the activity
