1 Warm Up- January 30, 2019 Five Words…Three Words List five words that come to mind when you think of GDP and Standard of Living. Students then get into pairs, trios, or groups of four to share and discuss their words. Finally each group selects three words to share and explain to the entire class.

4 1ST World Country A country that is doing quite well economically and socially and its members are not struggling for survival day to day A country that has high amounts of the following: Food Money Education Employment Life Expectancy A country that has low amounts of the following: Poverty Birth Rate Death Rate People with HIV/AIDS Infant Mortality Rate

5 3rd World Country A country that is not doing well on many levels and its members are struggling for survival day to day A country that has a high amounts of the following: Birth Rate Illiteracy People with HIV/AIDS Unemployment Infant Mortality Rate A country that has low amounts of the following: Education Life Expectancy Money Debt Health Care

7 Population The number of people currently living in a specific town, city, state, country, etc.

8 G.D.P. per capita (per person)
Gross Domestic Product The average amount of money a person (over 18) makes in that country in one year

9 Literacy Rate The percentage of people that are able to read and write (over the age of 15)

10 Life Expectancy How long a person is expected to live

11 Population Below Poverty Line
How many people live below an acceptable standard of living

12 Unemployment Rate The percent of people that are WILLING to work and cannot find a job This does not include retired people or people not looking for a job

13 Birth Rate The number of births per every 1,000 people in the country in one year

14 Death Rate The number of deaths per 1,000 people in one year

15 Understanding Birth Rate/Death Rate
If the Birth Rate is higher than the Death Rate: More people are being born in that country each year compared to the amount of people that are dying. Therefore…the population is rising.

16 Understanding Birth Rate/Death Rate
If the Birth Rate is lower than the Death Rate: Less people are being born in that country each year compared to the amount of people that are dying. Therefore…the population is falling.

17 Understanding Birth Rate/Death Rate
If the Birth Rate is the same as the Death Rate: The same amount of people are being born in that country each year compared to the amount of people that are dying. Therefore…the population is staying the same.

18 Debt – External The amount of money a country’s government owes other governments who have lent them money

19 I.M.R. Infant Mortality Rate
For every 1,000 births in a given year, this is the number of children that will most likely die before their first birthday

20 People Living with HIV/AIDS
The term HIV/AIDS represents the entire range of disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus from early infection to late stage symptoms This disease attacks the immune system
