2 Nursing in Cancer Care Nurses are essential to interdisciplinary cancer control efforts, as nurses make an important contribution to meeting the needs of people affected by cancer at all stages of the cancer journey. EdCan National Education Framework (Aust), 2006. Nurses make a unique contribution to cancer care: Proving care and delivering treatment in multidisciplinary context Enhancing the experience of a persons cancer treatment journey Important to continue to strengthen nursing in terms of: Nursing professional development – well prepared workforce Exploring new nursing models – looking at new ways of doing things

3 Looking Back Jan 11 – Specialist Cancer Nursing Report
Oct 11 – CCN Nurse Directors appointed Nov 11- Scoping of Cancer Nursing Regionally March 12 – Cancer Nursing Strategy Sept 12 – Cancer Nurse Coordinator project August 13 – National Cancer Nursing Forum Tracking the development of the ND role Only Cancer Network to have a formal nursing leadership role Tension between regional and national work – provides opportunities - mirrors Cancer Network perspective Within CCN a mix of: Nursing specific projects/ Contribution to wider CCN work programme

4 Leadership and Communication
Contribute Nursing Voice to CCN Work Regional Communication Plan Support development of national cancer nursing collaborative Role cemented in CCN team makeup Strengthen regional communication Follow through on supporting national development – many benefits regionally

5 Excellence in Cancer Care
Promote key worker concept across primary/ secondary integration Development of Cancer Nurse Coordinator Model Chemotherapy nurse education regionally/ nationally CNC project given us an opportunity to explore further primary secondary linkages for cancer nursing Opportunity to link with our Australian colleagues for professional development Specific need to look at a national care of the patient receiving anti neoplastic therapy nursing programme

6 Workforce Development
Implement learnings from CNC project across nursing roles regionally Strengthen nursing alignment across the two cancer centres Development of the knowledge and skills framework for cancer nursing Central region a possible pilot for knowledge and skills framework implementation

7 Research and Evidence Base
Development of the learning matrix as a tool for CNS development Scope development of academic chair for cancer nursing Scope development of national cancer nursing programme in collaboration for Australian centres Intern programmes for CNS / NP roles

8 Aims of 2013/14 Prioritize on professional development opportunities for cancer nursing Pursue activities that promote alignment for nursing across cancer centres and integration across primary/ secondary care Support development of national cancer nursing collaborative Key themes What we develop nationally will deliver regionally eg CNC and K & Skills framework projects
