1 Open Science: is the Research Data Alliance a help or a hindrance?
14th May 2019 Hilary Hanahoe, Secretary General, Research Data Alliance

2 Open Science Collaborative and collective work
Accessible scientific research Accessible knowledge @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

3 Ambitious … but not impossible
The RDA Vision Researchers and innovators openly share data across technologies, disciplines, and countries to address the grand challenges of society. @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

4 Complex … but achievable
The RDA Mission Build the social and technical bridges that enable open sharing and re-use of data. @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

5 Realistic … actually happening
The RDA Approach To further research innovation, efficiency and reproducibility by identifying and facilitating socio-technical best practices and standards for research data, tools and infrastructure. @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

6 RDA Guiding Principles
Openness Consensus Balance Harmonization Community-driven Non-profit and technology-neutral @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

7 Designed and developed by the Community … for the community
Multi, cross- and inter- disciplinary Grass roots approach International, neutral, social platform @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

8 The heart of RDA … 102 groups
Interest Groups Working Groups develop and implement tools, policy, practices & products for data management that are adopted and used by projects, organisations, communities TIMING: MONTHS TOTAL: 36 Working Groups focus on solving a specific data sharing problem and identifying what kind of infrastructure needs to be built. TIMING: as long as group is active TOTAL: 66 Interest Groups RECOMMENDATIONS: Concrete deliverables - “Running code”, tools, standards, etc. OUTPUT: Possibly case statements for new WGs, guidelines, best practice, etc. @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0

9 RDA Recommendations & Outputs
SUPPORTING OUTPUTS OTHER OUTPUTS Equivalent of the “specifications” or “standards” that other organisations create and endorse. 18 Recommendations of which 8 ICT Technical Specifications Outputs of RDA WGs and IGs that are fruit of RDA work, but are not necessarily adoptable bridges. 12 Supporting Outputs Anything a WG or IG wants to register and report, e.g. workshop reports, articles, survey results, etc. @resdatall CC BY-SA 4.0
