1 Shakespeare List two things you know to be true about Shakespeare and one thing you’d like to know about Shakespeare. (Nothing is not an acceptable answer to either of these questions.) November 2nd, 2016

2 William Shakespeare 1564 – 1616 Author of more than 36 known plays and 150 poems. Not university educated (low level education) Speculations that Shakespeare’s work is not truly his work Due to his lack of education Due to lack of knowledge on Shakespeare himself

3 His birth is unregistered, but legend pins the date as April 23, 1564, possibly because it is known that he was baptized a few days later. Born in Warwickshire, England. Shakespeare did not attend university, which was not unusual for the time. His vocabulary, however, exceeds that of any other English writer of his time by a wide margin.

4 Personal life: In 1582, at the age of eighteen, William Shakespeare married twenty-six-year-old Anne Hathaway. Very little information exists about his life as a young playwright. In any case, young William was NOT an immediate universal success.

5 When was he successful? With Richard III, Henry VI, The Comedy of Errors, and Titus Andronicus under his belt, Shakespeare became a popular playwright by 1590. The year 1593, however, marked a major leap forward in his career when he secured a prominent patron: The Earl of Southampton.

6 What is note-worthy? -38 credited plays
-Countless sonnets and other poems -Introduced over 3000 new words to the English language -Acting began in 1500’s -Performed and wrote plays for the Globe Theatre

7 The Globe Theatre The Globe Theater was a theater in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. The Globe was built in 1599 using timber from an earlier theater.

8 Tragedies Romeo and Juliet: A play about star-crossed lovers that love each other in spite of their families’ feud. Hamlet: A play about the tragic aftermath of Hamlet’s Father’s death. Macbeth: A play about two generals that have a foretelling encounter with witches. Other tragedies include: Othello, Timon of Athens, and Julius Caesar.

9 Shakespeare’s Death William Shakespeare died in 1616
Shakespeare was buried in the chancel of his church at Stratford. The lines above his tomb, allegedly written by Shakespeare himself, read: “Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear To dig the dust enclosed here. Blessed be the man that spares these stones And cursed be he that moves my bones"

10 Shakespearian Sonnets
There are 154 sonnets, a poem of fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes, in English typically having ten syllables per line. The speaker is male, their main subject is love They follow the rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG There is little to be agreed upon aside of those three statements. The sonnets provoke more questions than explanations. Is the sonnets’ speaker a character invented by Shakespeare or the poet himself? If the sonnets are about Shakespeare, then who are the real people behind the characters the sonnets mention?
