3. The term computer is derived from the term ‘compute’
The term computer is derived from the term ‘compute’. To compute means to calculate. Computers are used for a variety of applications such as banking applications, desktop publishing, word processing scientific research work, weather forecasting, ticket reservations etc. A computer can be defined as an electronic device that operates on data, analyze it and then applies a predefined set of instructions to it to produce some kind of output.

Computer have made a rapid process. Now almost every person is familiar with the word computer 30 years back it use was limited only to technical people such as engineers and research scientists.

5. Characteristics of Computer
Speed: Computers work at an incredible speed. A computer perform operations with very high speed. A computer can perform millions of instructions per second thus carrying out even the complex tasks in a fraction of seconds. Accuracy: In addition to being fast, computers are also accurate. Errors that may occur can almost always be attributed to human error (inaccurate data, poorly designed system or faulty instructions/programs written by the programmer).

Never Gets Tired: The computer can work continuously without getting tired. Without the lack of concentration they help us in doing a number of jobs that require a great accuracy. No feeling: It does not have feelings or emotion, taste, knowledge and experience. Thus it does not get tired even after long hours of work. It does not distinguish between users.

Large storage capacity: a computer has large capacity, it can store huge amount of data. Thus data either letter, picture, sound etc. we can store several GB of data into a computer. No Intelligence: Computer is a dumb machine and it cannot do any work without instruction from the user. It performs the instructions at tremendous speed and with accuracy. It is you to decide what you want to do and in what sequence. So a computer cannot take its own decision as you can.

It depends entirely upon you how much data you want to store in a computer and when to lose or retrieve these data. Versatile: A computer is also versatile machine. It can do a number of jobs depending upon the instructions. A computer can be used to write a letter to a friend in a word processor and at the same time listen to various songs through media player.
