1 New Year, New Habits Everyday Reviewing
Is making new study habits to re-wire your brain and treat your memory like a muscle to make it stronger

2 But now we know our brains can be re-wired every day to work better
Old World ‘Smart’ World People once believed our brains were fixed at birth so limited our abilities But now we know our brains can be re-wired every day to work better

3 Memory = Thinking People also once believed memory was just about remembering facts & figures But brain science reveals ‘memory’ is key to everyday thinking, from playing sport to learning to drive So all this will help make us better ‘thinkers’ and so better ‘learners’

4 Memory can be a Big Problem in school!
What can often happen to your new learning after lessons? Lesson After lessons, what happens to your new learning? Later Brain science tells us most of it is forgotten!

5 ‘Forgetting’ is normal
Brain science shows we all forget new stuff very quickly… How much do we remember? I’ve forgotten 80% after a week! 80 60 % 40 20 LESSON Day Week Month 6 Months Time Year

6 So Our Brains Need ‘Rocket Boosts’ !
Your memory needs regular top-ups to remember 80 60 40 Doing regular rocket boosts to top-up memory is called ‘reviewing’ 20 LESSON Review Review Review Review Review Time

7 Let’s start by thinking about how our brains work
Inside Your Brain Let’s start by thinking about how our brains work Imagine you could ‘see’ inside your head And imagine seeing your brain cells working!

8 Neurons In Biology you’d draw a detailed diagram
Are the special building blocks of our brains Cell body Nucleus Dendrite Axon Myelin sheath Axon Terminals In Biology you’d draw a detailed diagram But a simple sketch is OK for us (with ‘tentacles’!)

9 How Neurons Make Memories
Remember there are no physical links – it’s all chemical ! When stimulated, neurons ‘fire’ chemicals to ‘wire’ or link with other brain cells Those neural networks of linked brain cells are what we call memories

10 ...and the more they wire or link!
So the more you stimulate your brain cells, the more chemicals they fire… ...and the more they wire or link! That makes stronger neural networks and stronger memories

11 ‘Cells that fire together wire together!’
So we need to keep our brain cells stimulated because… ‘Cells that fire together wire together!’

12 ‘Every time we think in a certain way, practise a particular task or feel a specific emotion, we strengthen these roads…’

13 L w Your Memory Your brain has two types of memory* Long Term Working
Brain science shows why ‘remembering’ can be hard… Your brain has two types of memory* Working Memory Long Term Memory Temporary L w Only holds what you’re thinking about right now Permanent Your lifelong store of learning * Neuroscientists are still working all this out! But this ‘simplified’ model is widely used.

14 So Here’s What We Need To Work On…
Working memory & long term memory are like a team… Remembering is all about shifting stuff between working & long term memory so you don’t forget! L w Everyday Reviewing is all about finding better ways to make this happen for you!

15 Open your planner and find this page!
Here’s the idea behind the new ‘study habit’ And here’s a quick routine to use

16 So on one or two nights like this, do 15 mins of Everyday Reviewing instead of doing ‘nothing’!

17 The key is to wait a while before giving memory a boost…
When Should You Review? The key is to wait a while before giving memory a boost… Wait Week or Longer or Longer! Original Lesson Wait Review Topic

18 The key is to use lots of methods to stimulate your brain cells
How Should You Review? The key is to use lots of methods to stimulate your brain cells Review Topic Original Lesson Wait Reviewing means using lots of different ways of working to top-up your memory so you remember Diagram Talk Book Record Quiz

19 L w Why Should You Review?
Long term memory associates or links all those methods together Variety helps neurons fire & wire into strong network L w And repeated ‘use’ your makes memories stronger

21 ‘Cells that fire together
Memory Challenge Keep Your Brain Cells Stimulated ‘Cells that fire together wire together’
