2 Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon Bonaparte grew up with a military education & with great exposure to Enlightenment ideals He rose up through the French Army & won many victories & promotions

3 Napoleon Bonaparte Proclaimed to be a Republic
Overthrew the Directory, established the Consulate in 1799 Proclaimed to be a Republic Napoleon held absolute power He appointed officials, controlled the army, influenced the legislature & conducted foreign affairs

4 Napoleon Bonaparte Two years later, he crowned himself – Emperor Napoleon I

5 Napoleon Bonaparte Created the Napoleonic Code which brought about many revolutionary ideas: Equality before the law 2) The right to choose a profession 3) Religious toleration 4) Abolition of serfdom The code forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs should go to the most qualified

6 Napoleon Bonaparte Denied special privileges to: clergy & nobility Developed a capable bureaucracy – government officials received jobs & promotions based on ability Did not grant: Freedom of the Press – shut down 60 of France’s 73 newspapers & he also banned certain books

7 FRENCH EMPIRE The Napoleonic Empire
Napoleon began to war with various countries in Europe between , he was the master of Europe Dependent States were kingdoms ruled by relatives of Napoleon Spain, Holland, Italy & others

8 FRENCH EMPIRE Allied States were countries defeated by Napoleon (Prussia, Austria, Russia, and Sweden) Great Britain was the only country in Europe that was not defeated all or in part, by France Napoleon made a mistake known as the Continental System He tried to blockade Britain & disrupt their trade, but it ended up hurting France Signed an agreement to czar Alexander I to not trade with GB Europe sealed off from GB except for the Iberian Peninsula
