3 Reflection Occurs when a wave hits a surface and bounces off Examples:
You can hear your echo because sound waves bounce off walls and floors You can see your reflection because light bounces off your face and a mirror

4 Reflection The image formed by a reflection depends on how smooth the surface is Page 237, Figure 11

5 Refraction The bending of a wave as it moves from one medium into another Example: Objects under water look like they are in a different position or are broken

6 Refraction Rainbows are caused by refraction
When sunlight enters a rain drop, the light bends Because the light contains different colors and the colors bend at different angles, you can see all the different colors as the light exits the rain drop Page 239

7 Diffraction The bending of waves around an object (a barrier or obstacle) Example: You may be able to hear the band playing down a hallway
