1 Research at Emily Carr University
Emily Carr recently moved from Granville Island into a purpose built campus on Great Northern Way with a capacity that is 22% larger than our previous campus. Today our faculty and students are focused on: Creative engagement, trans disciplinary approaches, and a strong maker culture.

2 The culture of Emily Carr continues to undergo a series of fundamental shifts driven by the Research we do at the school. Through state-of-the art digital technology and design analysis we explore new means of prototyping and production. Research informs the pedagogy of our faculty, empowers new means of production, employment, creative and aesthetic expression, and culminates in a wealth of opportunities for our graduates.

3 Research projects are faculty led collaborations with our industry partners. Together, we advance knowledge and pursue interdisciplinary experimentation. I want to take a moment to tell you more about our four labs and some specific collaborative industry projects.

4 Academic Institutions Local Entrepreneurs Non-Profit Organizations
PARTNERS Health Authorities Academic Institutions Local Entrepreneurs Non-Profit Organizations 2017/2018 11 Team-based Projects 24 Research Assistants 10 Faculty/Adjunct Researchers 8 Course-based Projects 135+ Students HDL is a research and design centre that brings together faculty and students with local industry and community partners to improve the design of health products, services and experiences through a human-centred and participatory design approach.  Each year the Health Design Lab works on projects with a range of partners including Health Authorities, hospitals, public organizations, non-profits, private businesses and local start-ups. HDL has an expertise in Human-Centred Design, Participatory Design Research, Community Engagement, Interaction, Communication, Industrial and Service Design.

5 AGING & DEMENTIA This year HDL has been a focused on Aging & Dementia. The lab worked with Providence and their Residential care team to create an under-bed lighting system to improve the quality of sleep and reduce falls for residents.

6 Blue Marble Labs Partnership
Material Matters provides advisory services to SMEs operating within the sectors of Additive Manufacturing, Design for Manufacture, Connected Devices and Maker Technologies. Through their work they explore: Open Source Hardware, 3D Printing, scanning for volumetric capture and the Industrial design of wearables. Blue Marble Labs Partnership

7 Blue Marble Labs Partnership
Material Matters worked with Blue Marble Labs to design and develop a wearable environmental sensor. Blue Marble Labs had a great technology but needed a human-centric design. As a result Material Matters developed a wearable prototype and accessory app including flow-diagram and wireframe prototypes. Blue Marble Labs Partnership

8 Living labs develops creative projects, social venture and entrepreneurship. The lab is driven by art and design building projects and has a partnership model that explores art and design lead innovation.

9 Starting in 2015, Startland has worked with industry, government, and the non-profit sector to create over 150 opportunities for technology training in BC.

10 In 2019, led by Living Labs the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship will establish the first culture and creative sector incubator in Western Canada.

11 The Basically Good Media Lab (BGML) is a research group focused on interactive digital media technologies. Since 2009, research topics have included stereoscopic 3D image capture and editing, high dynamic range and variable frame rate capture, and immersive media in social and performative contexts.

12 The aim of the BGML is to inquire into the use of emerging technologies and investigate the potential of these technologies to affect cultural production, and socio-economic development. In the context of the supercluster, the BGML is interested in looking at the potential of machine learning and data analysis for new ways of engaging with the local environment including democratic processes, city development, and cultural production.

13 IM4 is a 3-year project that is designed to strengthen immersive media skills for indigenous media producers and artists. IM4 will nurture an ecosystem of developers, storytellers, media professionals and artists who will apply indigenous aesthetics and storytelling methodology to the field of VR/AR steering it toward Indigenous cultural expression and economic objectives.

14 Thank You! Today, the importance of creative and cultural industries as drivers of employment and economic development cannot be overstated. Our research in art, design and media deliberately enriches all of these practices and businesses. And we have a methodology that is tested, effective and based on collaboration and exploration.
