Basics of Word Processing
Word Wrap Hard Return vs. Soft Return Insertion Point Toggle Switches Insert Mode vs. Overtype Mode Deleting Text Word Wrap - Text automatically wraps text from one line to the next without pressing the enter key Hard Return - Created by the user when the enter key is pressed Soft Return - Created by the word processor as it wraps text from one line to the next Insertion Point - Flashing vertical line that marks the place where text will be entered Toggle Switch - A switch that causes the computer to alternate between two modes. For example, Caps Lock alternates between uppercase and lower case. Insert Mode - Moves existing text to the right as new characters are being added. Insert key toggles between insert and overtype mode. Overtype Mode - Types over existing characters as new characters are added. Used for correcting typos. Normal View - this view shows only the body of the current page; faster and preferable when entering text and editing (See Figure 1.6 page 15 in textbook) Page Layout View - this view shows the complete page with headers, footers and all formatting applied (See Figure 1.7 page 16 in textbook) AutoCorrect Feature - corrects predefined spelling errors and/or mistakes in capitalization automatically as the words are entered. Word 2003 Screen Formatting Toolbar Title bar Minimize Restore Close Buttons Menu bar Standard Toolbar Task pane Ruler Point to the screen items to show the students the positions of the menu bar and other items listed at the bottom of the slide. Refer to the textbook and slides for a large full-color view of the icons for the Standard and Formatting toolbars. The Office Assistant can display tips and introduce you to new features by suggesting more efficient ways to accomplish tasks. The Office Assistant displays a light bulb whenever there is a suggestion for the current task. Screen Tips can be displayed by clicking the screen tip (What’s this?) icon. Discuss the items on the Standard Toolbar and Formatting Toolbar. The task pane is one of the biggest changes in the Office applications. The File Menu Commands Print command Close command Exit command Save command Open command New command Recent documents The File menu is used to open, close, save, and print word documents. It is also used to exit Word. The Save command copies the current document to the same file and disk location. The Save As command copies the current document to a different file and disk location. Troubleshooting Click to see additional commands The View menu is used to change the view of the document as well as display or hide toolbars. Normal View shows only the body of the current page, which is faster and preferable when entering text and editing. Print Layout View shows the complete page with headers, footers, and all formatting applied. The Show/Hide (¶) button is a toggle switch to show or hide the hard returns in a document. Spell Check Word not found in dictionary Suggested change Change button The Spell Check checks the spelling of the document. The Custom Dictionary enables you to add specialized words that the built-in dictionary does not recognize and that is used by the spelling checker. Save As Command Save As Command Backup Options Backup Procedures Quit Without Saving File Options The Save Command saves a copy of the current document periodically as you work, or each time you save it.
