1 Worldliness 1. I have several lessons on Worldliness and the sins associated with worldliness. 2. Today, I will cover the use of Alcohol in Social Drinking 3. Through out the year we will try to cover all of these Worldliness sermons.

2 Worldliness 1. The world thinks nothing at all of drinking with meals and as a means of relaxing after a stressful day. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2. The thoughts of Godliness never enter their minds except maybe on Sunday morning and that would be fleetingly. 3. Those that are not fully addicted will be more that happy to buy you a beer and sit and talk about anything sports related. 4. My Aunt Fay would counter offer such an invitation with “Why not just go to Church with me and we can talk about God.” Drinking

3 Drinking & Drunkenness
Is a Problem Nearly As Old As Man Noah got drunk (Gen. 9:20-ff) Lot got drunk (Gen. 19:30-38) We all know that drunkenness is a sin But, what about social drinking – in moderation? “Responsible drinking”? Occasional beer or wine? 1. Drinking & Drunkenness Is a Problem Nearly As Old As Man, if not as old as man. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2. Noah got drunk (Gen. 9:20-ff) And Noah began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. Then he drank of the wine and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. (Genesis 9:20-21) a. If it were not already here, how would Noah know or learn to grow grapes and ferment wine ? 3. Lot got drunk (Gen. 19:30-38) It was just a little social drinking for the evening. So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. (Genesis 19:33) Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. (Genesis 19:35) 4. We all know that drunkenness is a sin and it can lead to unintended actions on our part. 5. But, what about social drinking – in moderation? a. I find no Scripture that allows social drinking in any manner, only condemnation. 6. “Responsible drinking”? a. Is there any such thing as responsible drinking? b. Who determines responsible? The bar tender or party host? 7. Occasional beer or wine? A. The scripture does not address the possibility of being occasionally drunk.

4 Social Drinking Is A Sinful Act
The Point Is Social Drinking Is A Sinful Act 1. The Point Is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2. Social Drinking Is A Sinful Act

5 Drinking I. It Is Drunkenness I. It is a sin because; --

6 It Is Drunkenness It Is Drunkenness
Bible Condemns Drunkenness Eph. 5:18 Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-11 Social Drinking Is Drunkenness “Drunk” – “to grow drunk… the process of the state…” (Vines) Contrast: 1 Thess. 5:6-9 If takes 5 beers to make you drunk, 1= 1/5 Leads to a greater state It Is Drunkenness >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1. Bible Condemns Drunkenness 2. Eph. 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (Ephesians 5:18) 3. Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-11 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21) Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4. Is it not clear to you that “Social Drinking Is Drunkenness”? 5. “Drunk” – “to grow drunk… it is the process of getting to the state of drunkenness…” (Vines) 6. Contrast: 1 Thess. 5:6-9 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, (1 Thessalonians 5:6-9) 7. If it takes 5 beers to make you drunk, 1 beer = 1/5th drunk 8. 1/5th leads to a greater state of drunkenness.

III. It Is Harmful IV. Drinking Is Condemned IV. Drinking Is Condemned

12 Drinking Is Condemned 1 Pet. 4:3 “Banqueting” – Drinking

(1 Peter 4:3) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a. “Banqueting” – Drinking at meetings and parties until drunk, Peter condemns the idea of these parties and lumps them in with the abominable. b. “The drinking bout, the banquet,… drinking does not have to be, of necessity, excessive ” for condemnation. 14 Influences Others Moderate Social Drinking
Major cause of recruiting new drinkers Not the drunk, alcoholic. Matthew 18:6-7 Influences Others 1. Why not “Moderate Social Drinking”, just one for business reasons. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a. This is the Major cause of recruiting new drinkers who lose control of their desires to follow Christ. b. A good Christian example, is not your local drunk, alcoholic. Matthew 18:6-7 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! (Matthew 18:6-7)

15 Drinking I. It Is Drunkenness II. It Is Strong Drink
III. It Is Harmful IV. Drinking Is Condemned V. Influences Others VI. Arguments Made To Justify Social Drinking >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1. VI. What are the Arguments Made To Justify Social Drinking?

16 Arguments Make To Justify
John 2:1-11 – Water into Wine No evidence fermented Arguments Make To Justify 1. Well, if it is good enough for Jesus, it is good enough for me….. 2. John 2:1-11 – Jesus turned “Water into Wine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a. There is No evidence that it was fermented or was placed in vessels that contained fermentation from fermented wine.

17 “Wine” (Greek: Oinos) Unfermented Fermented Matt. 9:17 Mark 2:22
(Alcohol Content) Eph. 5:18 “drunk with wine” Unfermented (No Alcohol Content) Matt. 9:17 Mark 2:22 “new wine in new bottles” 1. “Wine” (Greek: Oinos) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2. Can mean Fermented and does in many cases in the Scripture. 3. It can show (Alcohol Content) as in Eph. 5:18 “drunk with wine And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (Ephesians 5:18) 4. It can also be used as Unfermented that is with (No Alcohol Content) Matt. 9:17; Mark 2:22 “new wine in new bottles” Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." (Matthew 9:17) and (Mark 2:22) 5. My Lord is not a bartender for anyone’s party, but He knew the value of good healthy fruit and the juices from that fruit. Thus says the LORD: "As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, 'Do not destroy it, For a blessing is in it,' So will I do for My servants' sake, That I may not destroy them all. (Isaiah 65:8) a. The LORD, all capitals in the Scriptures refers to God the Father. b. The new wine is the fruit juice that is still in the cluster of grapes, and it contains a healthy blessing within in it. c. The term “new wine” is found in 35 verses and 72 times in the Old Testament.

18 Arguments Make To Justify
John 2:1-11 – Water into Wine No evidence fermented If justifies social drinking – justifies excessive 1 Timothy 5:23 – Drink A Little Wine Wine - does not have to be fermented For Medical purposes. 1 Timothy 3:8 – Not Given To Much Wine Assumes can have a little Forbidding excess does not justify less 1. John 2:1-11 – Water into Wine Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim. (John 2:7) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a. There is No evidence that what Jesus made was fermented b. If this justifies our social drinking – then it justifies that drinking to excessive amounts. 2. 1 Timothy 5:23 – Drink A Little Wine No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. (1 Timothy 5:23) a. Once again, the word “Wine” - does not have to be fermented to be called wine, and unfermented wine contains a blessing in it. b. This does not restrict the use of alcohol “For Medical purposes.” 3. 1 Timothy 3:8 – Not Given To Much Wine Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, (1 Timothy 3:8) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a. If you say this Scripture “Assumes can have a little wine” for social purposes, b. Remember, the act of forbidding excess, does not justify the use of less as we have shown in this lesson.
