1. We are going to be starting a book entitled, Downsiders
We are going to be starting a book entitled, Downsiders. In it, a community of people that live beneath the city exist. They know of the Topside, but the Topside does not know of them.
In the following slides, you will see some images of what would be considered an invisible community that exists in your world. Invisible communities/people exist outside of what we consider “normal”, either by chance or by circumstance.

2. To Do…
First: Examine all of the pictures. Second: Answer these questions. For societies that are by choice, what are motives that pull a group towards living in this manner? What are communal or individual “rules” or methods of maintaining the distance from the larger society? Third: Choose one of the pictures to do a short writing. You may choose the content for this as long as it is based on a picture. Your writing may be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or a character sketch. More directions are at the end of the pictures.

17. Open a Word Document to begin typing your writing, OR you may choose to write it in your journal. If you type, make sure you do save your work under your student number folder.
Then go back to slide 2 to complete all 3 tasks.
Finished…If you want to have a deeper understanding, you could do some research into Amish life, or reservation life, Deaf communities and culture, etc.
