1 Single photon emission computed tomography ventilation images of a male asthmatic subject at a, b) baseline and c, d) post-methacholine challenge, at approximately corresponding anatomical locations. Single photon emission computed tomography ventilation images of a male asthmatic subject at a, b) baseline and c, d) post-methacholine challenge, at approximately corresponding anatomical locations. The baseline scans show ventilation defects and a different pattern of ventilation anatomically. The new ventilation defects induced after methacholine challenge are subjectively apparent (arrows in c and d), as well as the changed ventilation patterns. Developing measurements that capture this topographical information that allows comparisons between ventilation patterns in figures 3 and 4 will be potentially useful to define different pathophysiological phenotypes of asthma.
