2 Learning outcomes: By the end of today’s lesson, you will be able to:
Identify the three major kinds of industrial region in the world. Give examples of countries in each of these regions. Explain why a company may choose to locate in one of these regions.

3 3 Major Industrial Regions
Industrialised regions. Newly-industrialised regions. Industrially-emergent regions. All countries and regions grouped together and placed in one of these categories based on level of industrial development.

4 Industrialised Regions
USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. Industrialised since the Industrial Revolution. Labour costs high. Located in the developed world.

5 Newly-industrialised Regions
India, China & South East Asia, Mexico and Brazil. MNCs attracted by cheap labour. Products produced include shoes, clothes and electronic goods.

6 Industrially-emergent Regions
Include countries in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Asia and South America. Very little manufacturing. May become a more attractive location in the future when companies seek to relocate as wages in Asia increase.

7 Over to you! Take a piece of paper. On one side, write the name of a country; on the other side, write the name of a product. Stick this piece of paper to the map of the world. Explain why the company that makes the product you have mentioned would locate in the country you have chosen.
