2 Learning with large data sets in AS/A level Mathematics
Bread consumption

3 How has bread consumption changed over time?
Has there been a change in the amount of bread consumed? Has there been a change in the type of bread consumed (white bread, brown bread, other bread)

4 How has bread consumption changed in London over time?

5 Open the AQA Large data set spreadsheet. Use the tab for London.

6 Copy row 8 (the titles) and rows 63, 64, 69 and 72 (total bread, white bread, brown bread, total other bread) to a new sheet.

7 Delete Bread from column B and type it in column C so that it is in the same column as the other descriptions. Delete the code column A, the blank columns, the Units column and the columns to the right of the 2014 data. Save your new spreadsheet.

8 Draw a graph to show the time series.
Click on the top left cell (in the diagram above this is A2) and drag across and down to the bottom right cell so that all five rows are selected.

9 Click on the Insert tab at the top of the spreadsheet
Click on the Insert tab at the top of the spreadsheet. Choose the line chart. Click Chart title and a text box will appear on the chart. Type a title such as ‘Bread consumption in London’.

10 Are there any differences in the trends?
Comparing Repeat the activity above to obtain similar line graphs for different regions. Are there any differences in the trends?
