As member of South Kent Sportsman’s Club you will have use of one of the finest shooting facilities in West Michigan, but along with your membership comes several responsibilities that must be strictly adhered to, in order to keep our club a safe place for our neighbors and our members to enjoy. It is extremely important that safety be foremost on your mind while present on club property. Please conduct yourself in a safe manner at all times. We’re all in this together, so be sure to keep an eye on your fellow members. If you see something that looks unsafe – say something! Now let’s show you the 4 major ranges here at SKSC. It’s opened with your key-card and we’ll cover how that works a bit later. Going South, on your left you will find the road and access control gate leading East to the 500-meter range. Continuing down the road you will pass our Club House to the West and our Trap and Skeet Ranges to the East. Finally, you will come to the access-control gate for our General-Purpose Bunkers and our 200-meter Range Complex. This gate has a key-pad to enter a combination that is updated yearly. The Special Purpose Match Bunkers have a gate that can only be opened by a match director. These bunkers can be used by members, but you must walk back to them. 13 Range Safety Fans Represents danger areas
Each range has its Safety Fan No one should be in these areas when the range is active Safety fans represent the dangerous areas of an active range and must remain clear of people and property during range operation. Each range has a Safety Fan that extends from the firing line, to the target and beyond. Here you see the Safety Fan for our shotgun ranges. Our South Range Complex. As well as our 500-meter range. No one should ever be in these areas when these ranges are active!

14 Remember the homes that are down-range!
Extended Safety Fans N Remember the homes that are down-range! Remember, bullets will not magically stop at our property lines! As you can clearly see, there are families living in homes that are down-range from SKSC, beyond our backstops. Therefore, it’s critically important that all members and our guests understand that bullets must NEVER leave the range you are shooting on! The continued future operation of our club is at stake if we don’t take safety as our #1 responsibility here at SKSC. We will explain the measures, rules and practices you must follow to ensure that all bullets remain on SKSC property. Bullets must NEVER leave the range you are shooting on!

The schedule for using this range is posted on the club web-site. The RO is there to control the range and monitor for safe operation. They are there so you can shoot, so be sure to thank them! Because the range gate is unlocked during operation of this range, you must sign-in and show a picture ID as well as your SKSC Membership Card. Members are still allowed to bring guests with then to use this range. Most importantly, it is expected that your rifle is already sighted-in for at least 200 meters BEFORE coming to this range. Let’s repeat that. It is expected that your rifle is already sighted-in for at least 200 meters BEFORE coming to the 500m range. If it is not, please go to our 200-meter range first and check your “zero” at 50, 100, 150 and then 200 meters. Only an SKSC RO can open or close the access gate on this range. The gate will remain open during the scheduled time when the RO is on-duty.

27 200 & 500-meter Range Rules Mandatory eye and ear protection
Place targets at the base of the back-stop Actions open and empty until on station and ready to shoot – use chamber flags! All three 200m ranges follow the same range commands; cease-fire covers all 3 ranges Do not handle any firearms when anybody is down-range servicing targets Keep all muzzles pointed down range and below the top of the back-stops Clean up after yourself Share the range with your fellow members The general rules for the 200-meter and 500-meter ranges are posted at each range. They are: Eye and ear protection must be used at all times. Place targets at the base of the back-stop Actions must be open and empty until on station and ready to shoot. Remember, all three ranges on the 200-meter complex are considered to be one range when in operation. Keep an eye out for other shooters on your range, or one or both of the other ranges. Do NOT handle any firearms when anyone is down range on any of the ranges. Keep all muzzles pointed safely down range and below the tops of the back-stops at all times. Clean up after you are done shooting, and Share the range with your fellow members.

28 General-Purpose Bunkers
#1 Gate #7 #8 #2 #9 May be used for rifle, pistol or shotgun Each bunker is its own firing range Place targets at the base of the back-stop Share the range with your fellow members #10 #3 #11 Parking #12 #4 The South Range Complex includes: Six 25-yard General-Purpose Bunkers. And twelve 7-yard General-Purpose Bunkers. These bunkers may be used for rifle, pistol or shotgun. Each bunker is considered its own separate firing range. Place targets at the base of the back-stop The firing point must be within the bunker you are using. There is absolutely no shooting from or across the road! #13 #14 #5 #15 South Range Road #16 #6 #17 #18

29 General-Purpose Bunkers
Here are what the General-Purpose bunkers look like. Note that the covered firing line are the farthest from the backstops from which shooting may take place. The covered firing line is the farthest point from the backstops from which shooting may take place

30 General-Purpose Bunker Rules
Mandatory eye and ear protection Actions open and empty until on station and ready to shoot Do not handle firearms when anybody is down-range Keep muzzles pointed down range & below the tops of the back-stops Targets must be placed at the base of the backstop so that bullets will impact the lower 1/3rd of the backstop Adjust the position of your firing line for the distance needed The covered bench is not always the firing line No shooting from beyond the covered firing line or at the side-walls! Never shoot from or across the road Clean up after yourself The rules for using our General-Purpose Bunkers are: Eye and ear protection must be used at all times. Actions are to be left open and empty until on station and you are ready to shoot. Never handle any firearms when anybody is down range. Keep all muzzles pointed down range and below the tops of the back- stops at all times. Always keep your target positioned at the base of the backstop so that your bullets will impact on the lower 3rd of the backstop. Adjust your distance to the target by moving your firing line relative to the target, however, only one firing line may be used when the range is shared. No shooting from beyond the covered firing line or at the side-walls. The covered bench is there for your convenience, and is not always your firing line. Never shoot from or across the road. Clean up your mess when you are done.

31 Match-Priority Bunkers
Enables SKSC to conduct pistol matches without closing other ranges Located behind (East) the six General-Purpose Bunkers Gate is closed and locked at all times except for matches May be used by members if the General-Purpose Bunkers are full, but you must walk to them (around gate) This is a shot-fall area from the Skeet ranges – eye protection is required! No general vehicle access Several years ago, SKSC built additional bunkers behind the six General-Purpose Bunkers along the road to the South Range Complex. These additional Match-Priority Bunkers allows SKSC to conduct organized shooting matches and still provide facilities for members to shoot, even during the largest match events. The gate is closed and locked at all times – except for matches. Upon the rare instance that all 18 General-Purpose Bunkers are in use, members may use these Match-Priority Bunkers if an organized shooting event is not in progress. However, you cannot drive your vehicle to the Match-Priority Bunkers. And because they are not seen from the road, you are not likely to be found quickly if an accident should happen on these ranges. A portion of this area lies within the shot-fall area of the Skeet ranges, and therefore eye protection is required to enter this area.

32 Target Placement & Other Range Rules
Now let’s talk about targets, the right and wrong way to place your targets, and a few other rules of the range. The Right Way The Wrong Way Why Wrong is Wrong Proper & Improper Targets Select-fire and Automatic Firearms

33 Target Placement – All Ranges
Right Way Wrong Way! Less than 1 yard Targets must be placed no further than 1 yard from the base of the backstop AND so that your bullets will impact into the lower 3rd of the backstop on any of our ranges. If you are shooting short distances, please use our General-Purpose Bunkers, and remember that the same rule applies there too. If you see anyone violating this simple rule, step up, call a Crease-Fire, and ask that the situation be corrected immediately. Remember, we are all equal members here, and we need to watch each-other’s back. Sponsored pistol matches may sometimes violate these target placement rules. However, these stages are well documented and approved by the club, and all shooting is monitored by a trained Range Officer. Tumbling targets and round targets that lie on the ground are not allowed at SKSC as they are highly prone to produce ricochets. More than 1 yard Your Target SKSC is your club If you see improper target placement, call a cease-fire and correct the situation!

34 The Dangers of Improper Target Placement
Wrong Way! Here is what could happen when too much distance exists between your target and the back-stop. Your bullet will skip off the ground or a hard object; and potentially miss the back-stop and leave the range altogether. Remember those houses behind the back-stops and within the Safety Fans? They are in range of many pistols and most rifles. That’s why proper target placement is so important to the continued safe operation of SKSC. Except during sponsored pistol matches, if you see anyone violating our target placement rules, call a Crease-Fire and see to it that the problem is corrected immediately. Again, we are all equal members here, and we need to watch each-other’s back. When too much space exists between the target and back-stop, the bullet can skip completely off the range!

35 “Proper Target” Rules Right Targets: Wrong Targets:
Paper (paper plates make great cheap targets) Cardboard, cardboard & wood lathe and cardboard boxes Swinging (metal) targets – But be very careful of ricochets Tin cans are OK, but never shot while on the floor of the range due to ricochets, and must be picked up when you’re done Watch out for sharp edges Wrong Targets: Anything that breaks or shatters (example: glass, clay birds, etc.) Anything flammable or explosive (example: propane tanks, Tannerite, etc.) Anything that may cause a ricochet off the range (example: tumble targets, etc.) Don’t shoot at our posts and silhouette rails! Don’t place targets in front of our posts or silhouette rails They are meant to hold targets; not to be targets! Clean-up your targets & debris after you’re done! Here are a few more common-sense rules regarding targets: Use the right materials as targets: Paper is the #1 choice, and inexpensive paper-plates make great targets. Cardboard and cardboard boxes, or cardboard stapled to wood lathe is another safe choice. Swinging metal targets can be used, but you need to be very careful that your rounds do NOT ricochet off the range. Tin cans are OK, but never shot while rolling on the floor of the range due to ricochets, and you MUST pick them up as soon as you are finished. Be sure to watch out for very sharp edges. Improper target materials include: Anything that breaks or shatters, for example glass, dry-wall or plastic. Anything that is flammable or may explode, such as propane tanks. Or anything that may cause a ricochet off the range. Please, don’t shoot any of our posts, target frames or silhouette rails. Don’t place your targets in front of our posts or rails. They are meant to HOLD targets, not to BE targets. And remember, clean up ALL of your mess when you are done.

36 Proper Target Placement
Target frames Staple your targets to the black material These are examples of proper target placement: You may staple or tape your targets to the black material on the built-in frames located on most ranges. Just be sure to keep targets toward the center of the frame in order to avoid shooting and damaging the frame itself. The other two examples show targets placed well above the silhouette rails and away from the posts that hold the rails and stationary silhouette. Above & behind rail

37 Bad Target Placement In front of post and rail
In front of target frame These are examples of bad target placement: Here we see a target placed with its center directly in front of our silhouette rail and the post that holds the stationary target. Rounds aimed at this target will only ad to the wear-and-tear of our range equipment. The second example shows a target with its center well above the top of the rim-fire-only backstop. A bulls-eye on this target will miss the back-stop and ricochet off the floor of the range and very likely over the center-fire berm at the back of the range. Remember the neighborhood behind this range?!? The third example shows a target placed in front of the post and frame-members of our target holders. Again, this causes major damage to the wooden frame and higher range maintenance costs. It’s your club and your money! Above short rim-fire backstop No targets on brow-catchers

38 Additional Range Notes
Targets may be placed farther from the back-stop during organized shooting events (such as USPSA) when shooting is controlled by a designated Range Officer using documented stage setups Short back-stops on the 200 and 500 meter ranges are for rim-fire use ONLY! No center-fire rounds! Do NOT hang targets on the railroad-tie brow catchers over the rim-fire silhouette target rails Brow catchers are there to stop ricochets from steel targets Some additional notes you should be aware of regarding the rules on our range: Targets may be placed more than 1 yard from the base of the back-stop during organized shooting events such as IPSC or USPSA when shooting is controlled by a designated Range Officer using documented stage setups. The short back-stops on the 200 and 500-meter ranges are for rim-fire use ONLY. Never use center-fire ammunition on these short back-stops. They were not designed or constructed to stop center-fire rounds. Here’s a simple rule: If the back-berm is taller than you are, then it’s safe for center-fire. Never place targets against the side –berms. Do NOT hang your targets from the railroad-tie brow-catchers over the silhouette target rails. These are in place to stop ricochet rounds and NOT to hold targets.

Is the line ready? Ready on the right, ready on the left Commence firing Cease Fire! Cease Fire! (2 times, loud & clear) Actions open Is the line clear? (wait a few seconds for an answer) The line is clear You may go forward and change targets Here are a few of the commands you will hear and use on our ranges: Is the line ready? Ready on the right, ready on the left. Commence firing. Cease Fire! Cease Fire! Say it twice, loud & clear to be sure everyone has heard you. Another shooter may shoot at the same time you call “Cease Fire”, and you may not be heard the first time. Actions open. Is the line clear? Wait a couple of seconds for another shooter to speak up. The line is clear. You may go forward and change targets. You don’t have to use these exact words, but you should follow the order of these examples.
