1 Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Science
2020 This powerpoint has three sections, one for each of level 1, 2 and 3. Find the relevant starting section

2 Why study Science next year?
Because you enjoy it You are good at it It is a future-focused field that allows you to develop employable skills, such as critical thinking It is an important entry requirement for many tertiary courses such as: Medicine Engineering Architecture Veterinarian Science Nursing Primary sector (dairying, forestry, arable farming etc) Most importantly: These courses feed onto Level 2 and Level 3 Sciences. It is very difficult to pick up Science at Level 3 due to the heavy course content. As a result you must meet course entry requirements for Year 12 courses.

3 What are the fun parts of taking a Science?
Field trips Heaps of fun practical's and experiments Great subjects that progress into tertiary study Knowing why and how things happen

4 It is optional to take a Year 11 Science in 2020
It is optional to take a Year 11 Science in You are able to take more than one Science. You have a variety of Science courses you can take next year (you are able to take more than one). There are FOUR full year courses. 11SCI a & b - Core Science (two semesters, 1 NCEA assessment in each) 11BIO a & b - Human Biology (two semesters, 1 NCEA assessment in each) 11SCP a & b- Physical Science (two semesters, 1 NCEA assessment in each) 11 AGS & HTS- NZ Agriculture & Horticulture (two semesters, 1 NCEA assessment in each) To gain entry into Year 12 science courses, you must gain at least 8 Science credits in Year 11, with at least ONE merit grade (or higher) in the senior subject you wish to take. Eg. If you wish to take CHE201, you must gain 8 science credits and a Merit in a Chemistry related assessment (these are found in 11SCIb - General Science - Chemistry & Biology or 11SCPa - Physical Science - Chemistry). Emphasize that Science is optional, but that not taking a Science in level 1, makes it difficult to take sciences in future years. It is seen as a prereqresuite for many tertiary courses.

5 These one semester courses are for interest but, have credits which can be used for entry into year 12 courses 11FSC - Forensic Science Introduction (1 internal NCEA assessment) 11SEC – Science - Extreme climates and sustainability (1 internal NCEA assessment)

6 These one semester courses are for interest but, do count towards entry requirements for Year 12 courses 11BBC- Science of the Brain (no NCEA assessments) 11AMS- Animal Management Science (no NCEA assessments)

8 Student selection examples
Student A Student B Student C Student D Description Student A wants to study in a Science field (such as medicine or engineering). They want to have a strong foundation for senior sciences. Student B enjoys Science and thinks they may look at a career in this field. After talking to their parents they decide to take a general science and ONE semester of a Science that interests them. Student C is unsure of their career pathway. They have enjoyed some aspects of science. They have talked their parents and agree that taking a general science course is a good idea to keep senior science courses open in 2021. Student D does not need science in their career plan. They have an interest in looking after their pets at home and animals in general. 2020 Science courses 11SCP a & b (both semesters) and 11BIO a & b (both semesters) 11SCI a & b (both semesters) and 11 SEC (one semester) 11SCI a & b (both semesters) 11AMS (one semester)
