3 The Office for University Equity and Compliance
Oversee all investigations and resolutions of allegations involving discrimination per established University policies; Policy on Equal Opportunity (EO) Policy on Non-Fraternization Policy on Sexual Harassment Policy on Rights and Responsibilities Under Title IX Advise members of the University community about their rights, responsibilities and reporting options;

4 Policy on Equal Opportunity
Northeastern University prohibits Discrimination and Retaliation on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, religious creed, sex (including pregnancy or pregnancy related condition), gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, veteran or disability status.

5 What is Title IX? Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972:
protects individuals from sex or gender-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance prohibits discrimination against pregnant or parenting students protects all students regardless of sex, gender or gender identity offers worldwide protection (not geographically bound)

6 Prohibited Offenses The conduct involving a student prohibited by the Title IX policy and includes: Sexual Assault Sexual Harassment Gender-based Harassment Sexual Exploitation Domestic Violence Intimate Partner Violence / Dating Violence Stalking Retaliation

7 Northeastern’s Commitment
Sex and gender-based discrimination is illegal under federal, state, and city laws and will not be tolerated within the Northeastern community. University policies prohibit sexual misconduct of any kind University policies prohibit retaliation from individuals participating in the report of sexual misconduct Northeastern promotes a safe and healthy living, learning, and working environment for all members of our campus community.

8 Student Rights Report or NOT Report the incident to the University and/or police Receive a University No Contact Order Assistance obtaining a judicial restraining/protective order Referrals to confidential medical, counseling, and related services on/off campus Alternative housing arrangements Change in academic/social schedules and obligations Option to seek disciplinary action through the University Discuss options of pursuing criminal charges with NUPD

9 Students are Not Alone If you know of any form of Prohibited Offense, contact any of the following on campus: Title IX Coordinator: Mark Jannoni, or NUPD: Emergency ; Non-Emergency (Reporting a sexual misconduct to NUPD does NOT commit the survivor to future legal action.) Any Title IX Reporter UHCS, SVRC or CSDS Spiritual Advisors for confidential support

10 Title IX Reporters Includes student workers who assume roles which other students may reasonably believe obligate that student worker to report allegations of a Prohibited Offense. Resident Assistants, Graduate Research Assistant or Teaching Assistants Student-employees in Residential Life, the N.U.in Program, a Dialogue of Civilizations program, and an Alternative Spring Break program

11 Title IX Reporters All faculty and staff are considered Title IX Reporters and: Must promptly report any and all information you receive pertaining to allegations/complaints of sex or gender-based discrimination. Ensure that the person reporting is safe Encourage the student to report or seek assistance May not make promises of confidentiality (more to come on this…) It is not your responsibility to investigate whether discrimination has occurred. Historically, Universities across encouraged RD’s and RA’s to be unofficial investigators. That is no longer the case. We have specially trained administrators an officers to do this critical work The person making the first report may be forced to testify in court Always on; except at church, take back the night…

12 Our Goal Our primary goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of the reporting/affected party and the community.

13 Your Response The response to a survivor's first disclosure may influence their decision to get help or report to authorities. If the first reaction to their disclosure of sexual violence is doubt or disrespect, the survivor is less likely to seek help. Survivors of sexual violence don't always behave the way we expect. That doesn't mean it didn’t happen! Listen without judging, giving advice, or pressing for details. I need you to trust and believe in the system we are building.

14 Assessing a Complaint What is a complaint?
Any information you receive, from whatever source, that indicates a Prohibited Offense has occurred. It does not have to be directly from the survivor. It does not have to be specific or detailed. When/where do I report? As soon as possible after receiving information that is or may be a complaint. To OUEC and/or NU Police Department When in doubt, REPORT!

15 Confidentiality vs Privacy
All staff and faculty members, coaches, RD’s and RAs have a duty to report any incident of Prohibited Offenses to the Title IX Coordinator. They will limit their report to only those individuals with a need-to- know. The Title IX Coordinator will try to honor a request for how to proceed, when possible. UHCS, SVRC and CSDS Clergy are exempt from reporting requirement and are confidential resources. Must balance the request with the University’s obligation to have a community free from sex and gender-based discrimination.

16 Responding to a Complaint
If I tell you something can you keep it a secret? Can I confide something to you? Can you keep this confidential? I want to tell you about something that happened. Thank you for trusting me. Depending on what you tell me I may be obligated to report it, but I hope you will tell me anyway so I can help you get to the resources you might need to assist you.

17 Northeastern’s Process
All student reports of sex or gender-based discrimination are promptly investigated by the Office for University Equity and/or NUPD All students are encouraged, though not required, to report incidents of sexual misconduct to NUPD Student rights and remedies are provided to both parties Options for resolution through University’s disciplinary processes Our Goal is to… sexually harassing conduct and prevent it from reoccurring

18 Non-Retaliation Policy
The University wants everyone to feel safe and comfortable reporting Prohibited offenses. Community members are protected from retaliation for reporting Prohibited conduct. Covers all parties participating in an investigation or disciplinary process, including witness.

19 Policy on Non-Fraternization
Commitment to provide equal opportunity to students, faculty and staff In order to avoid potential conflicts of interest, favoritism, exploitation, harassment or breaches of professional standards, the university prohibits romantic or sexual relationships where there is an inherently unequal position between the parties including supervision, direction or influence. No employee* shall pursue, have or maintain a romantic or sexual relationship with any undergraduate student. No employee, graduate research assistant or teaching assistant shall pursue, have or maintain a romantic or sexual relationship with any graduate or professional student whom they are responsible for teaching, grading, advising or otherwise supervising.
