1 Bell Ringer #3 (8/20 and 8/21) Copy the following information including the table, then answer the question in a complete sentence. A student wanted to test how the mass of a paper airplane affected the distance it would fly. Paper clips were added before each test flight. As each paper clip was added, the plane was tested to determine how far it would fly. Based on the data, what can you conclude from this experiment? Trial # Amount of Paper Clips Distance Flown 1 60 inches 2 45 inches 3 4 31 inches 6 19 inches

9 The Properties of Water
Page 10 and 11 notes

10 A. The properties of Water allow life to exist on Earth
The hydrogen bonds and polar covalent bonds allow for water’s unique properties to exist.

11 B. The structure of Water
Water is a polar molecule. Polar molecules have a slightly positive region and a slightly negative region. -Hydrogen=HAPPY=POSITIVE -Oxygen=“OH NO”=NEGATIVE

12 C. Hydrogen Bonds Opposite charges of polar molecules form hydrogen bonds. Positive hydrogen bonds to negative oxygen Hydrogen bonds occur give water unique properties that support life.

13 D. The FOUR main properties of water
Makes life sustainable Cohesive Behavior Ability to moderate temperature Expansion upon freezing Versatility as a solvent

14 1. Water is Cohesive and Adhesive
Cohesion= water molecules stick to other water molecules Hydrogen bonds create this “sticky” property. Adhesion =water sticks to other surfaces. This produces surface tension a skin like consistency on the surface Capillary Action is the ability for plants to absorb water and pass it throughout its structure using cohesion and adhesion

15 2. Ability to moderate temperature
Water has a high specific heat Water can absorb a lot of energy with only a slight increase in temperature This allows regulation of cell temperatures in the body Ex: Where do you run when the sand is hot at the beach and your feet start to burn?

16 3. Freezing causes expansion
Water is less dense when it freezes because it expands. Ice floats on bodies of water provides a layer of insulation to keep the whole body of water from freezing.

17 4. Versatile solvent Two parts to a solution:
Solvent (The liquid) Solute (What you dissolve into the liquid) Water dissolves almost any polar molecule Nonpolar substances (oil, fats, etc.) do not dissolve in water

18 e. pH Acids= low pH, high concentration H+ ions
Bases= High pH, low concentration H+ ions

19 Properties of water foldable
Create a 4-section foldable (fold hotdog wise) Complete the following for each property of water: Write the property of water on the outside of the flap & draw a picture that reminds you of this property of water On the inside flap complete the following tasks: Explain the property of water Include any important definitions (cohesion, capillary action, solvent, etc.) Describe a real-life example of the property Explain how the property is essential to sustaining life
