2 What is CR network ? For Regulator For network operator
CRN is an end-to-end system which involves numerous technical areas, such as system architecture, CR, DSA, networking, cooperation of diverse levels etc. The long-term vision of CRN is to provide ubiquitous access networks which can use spectrum on demands. The followings are the benefits brought by CRN, that’s why CRN is supposed to be the next innovation in wireless communication. For Regulator improved spectrum utilization Increased spectrum availability For network operator Increased service within certain spectrum Increased capacity (more users) through access to more spectrum For device Manufacturer more opportunity to provide competitive CR devices For End-User More capacity per user Ubiquitous mobility with single user device across disparate spectrum access environments Page 2

3 One scenario of future application
Spectrum Agent Legacy Spectrum Owner Inter-network Spectrum agent BS negotiation Intra-network Establishment of clusters Dynamic adaptation of resource Object of the framework is to get low complexity, low signaling overhead, high performance Cluster-based cellular CR network Page 3

4 Issues in CR network obviously, there are many issues, technical or non-technical, in the realization of CR network . The policy of spectrum management has not been full open yet. There are some specific on-going standards, but in order to realize CR network, an general standard organization is needed. When the spectrum will be used up is unclear, so the application scenarios need to be further studied. Languages and protocols need to be developed for CRN in signaling and negotiation. Lots of technical issues have not been addressed well or validated adequately. Page 4

5 Feasibility discussion on CR network
From the mentions above, we can see that it is still a long way for CRN to come into realization. whereas, some features of CRN may be introduced into wireless network evolution, such as in IMT-Advanced. Since IMT-Advanced networks will operate in different bands and support various services, some spectrum-related requirements need to be considered. The following may be worthwhile exploring: Spectrum Aggregation of discontinuous carrier to satisfy the large frequency band requirement in IMT-Advanced (e.g. 100MHz) Spectrum Sharing between different networks in IMT-Advanced which may belong to the same or different operators. Flexible Spectrum handoff between high and low bands, for example , between LAN and WAN due to different bands in IMT-Advanced. Page 5
