1 Research and Research Funding Opportunities in Germany In the Context of Research Alumni Work
Dr. Dagmar Broemme Programme Director Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Alumni Meeting of Leibniz University of Hanover 5 September, 2017 University of Glasgow

2 Overview 1 The Humboldt Foundation and Becoming a Humboldtian: Sponsorship Opportunities 2 The Humboldt Foundation and Research Alumni: Promoting German Research and International Collaboration 3 Research Alumni Work at Universities and Research Institutions In this presentation I‘d like to talk about three things: The Humboldt Network and Funding Opportunities 2) The Humboldt Foundation‘s role in the collaborative project “International Research Marketing” which is a joint initiative by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. All the activities within the project are part of the “Promote Innovation and Research in Germany” initiative under its brand “Research in Germany”. The initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and seeks to strengthen and expand R& D collaboration between Germany and international partners. Within this project, the Humboldt Foundation focuses on helping German universities and research institutions to develop their „research alumni“ networks; and 3) Specific ideas for activities that research alumni (like most of you are) can undertake to help promote international collaboration with German universities and other research institutions.

3 Overview 1 The Humboldt Foundation and Becoming a Humboldtian: Sponsorship Opportunities 2 The Humboldt Foundation and Research Alumni: Promoting German Research and International Collaboration 3 Research Alumni Work at Universities and Research Institutions Now, let‘s start with the Humboldt Network and Funding Opportunities.

4 The Humboldt Foundation's areas of work
sponsorship of international academics as a part of foreign cultural and educational policy strengthening cutting-edge research through internationalisation impetus for the research location Germany by promoting individuals advancing development through academic cooperation The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is active in various fields: - it supports international academics as part of foreign cultural and educational policy - it strengthens cutting-edge research through internationalisation - it enables individuals, who provide an impetus for the research location Germany, to spend time researching there - it promotes development by sponsoring cooperation with researchers from emerging and developing countries 4 4

5 Principles of the Foundation
sole selection criterion: academic excellence no quotas for countries or disciplines sponsorship of people, not projects free choice of academic host/collaborative partner in Germany independent scientific research, not stipulated by the Foundation The Humboldt Foundation supports people, not projects. It supports researchers in all disciplines. There are no quotas, neither for disciplines nor countries. The Foundation believes that even in the times of increasing team work the ability of the individual is the crucial factor for academic success. This is why it sponsors people not projects. Those chosen on this basis should be given as much freedom as possible to carry out their research projects. This includes allowing Humboldtians to choose their host institutions themselves and to conduct independent research without any stipulations from the Foundation. 5 5

Rather, academics in Germany are required to nominate foreign colleagues within their disciplines for these research awards. In addition to the Humboldt Research Award for outstanding scientists and scholars from all disciplines from abroad, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation also grants the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award to top-flight academics from abroad, who completed their doctorates less than 18 years ago. Highly respected foreign academics in the humanities and social sciences can be nominated for the Reimar Lüst Award for International Scholarly and Cultural Exchange. Additionally, science managers from all disciplines may be nominated for their interdisciplinary contribution to promoting cultural and academic relations between Germany and their own country. The Konrad Adenauer Research Award promotes academic relations between Canada and the Federal Republic of Germany and is awarded annually to an internationally recognised Canadian humanities scholar. The Phillip Franz von Siebold Award is granted annually to a Japanese academic for outstanding services to enhancing mutual understanding of culture and society in Germany and Japan. Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to five Anneliese Maier Research Awards funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to internationally established researchers from abroad in all fields of the humanities, social science, cultural science, law and economics. The Max Planck Research Award (joint research award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Max Planck Society) is announced on an annually-alternating basis for areas within science and engineering, life sciences and the humanities. Successful top-rank junior researchers from abroad, who have completed their doctorate with distinction in the last six years, are eligible to apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award. Award winners may spend five years building up working groups and working on a high-profile, innovative research project of their own choice at a German research institution they have selected themselves. The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship enables leading global academics from abroad to undertake longer term pioneering research at universities and research centres in Germany. 8 8

12 Alumni Sponsorship and International Networking
More than 28,000 Humboldtians in over 140 countries: “Once a Humboldtian – Always a Humboldtian“ Alumni sponsorship and global networking through (inter alia): further research stays Research Group Linkage Programme Humboldt Colloquia and Kollegs Humboldt Alumni Associations Humboldt Alumni Award Goal: Creating and sustaining a vibrant network We have the motto “Once a Humboldtian – always a Humboldtian". It means that Humboldt sponsorship is enduring: the Foundation is a lifetime partner, maintaining the connections on a long-term basis through its alumni sponsorship programmes. Amongst other things, networking sponsorship caters for further research stays in Germany. This gives fellows a chance to revitalise relationships, make contacts with new partners, continue joint projects already underway, or build new collaborations. The Research Group Linkage Programme allows Humboldtians from developing countries to apply for sponsorship in order to cooperate over a period of three years with a researcher working at a German institute and additional cooperation partners in other countries. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation regularly organises colloquia abroad to which it invites research fellows and research award winners living in the host country. Last year we held the Colloquium here at Tel Aviv University. The Foundation provides financial support for Humboldt Alumni Associations as well as for individual Humboldtians to organise regional and specialist conferences. These so-called Humboldt Kollegs have become one of the most popular instruments for strengthening regional and specialist networks. The Humboldt Alumni Awards for innovative networking initiatives are granted to fellows and award winners abroad. Each award is valued at up to 25,000 EUR, and three awards are granted annually. They are designed to support projects not covered by the Foundation's existing sponsorship and alumni programmes. The ultimate goal of these activities is to create and sustain a vibrant network which benefits both the German side and the international alumni. 12 12

13 Overview 1 The Humboldt Foundation and Becoming a Humboldtian: Sponsorship Opportunities 2 The Humboldt Foundation and Research Alumni: Promoting German Research and International Collaboration 3 Research Alumni Work at Universities and Research Institutions Now we turn to the next topic, namely the Humboldt Foundation and Research Alumni.

14 The Collaborative Project „International Research Marketing“ sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) The overarching goals of this initiative are to increase the international visibility and profile of Germany as a place to do research and to enable German researchers to work together with the global scientific elite in their respective areas – be it by attracting the best researchers to come to Germany for a research stay or by establishing joint projects with them.

15 Research in Germany Communicating the attractiveness
Kiel Research in Germany Rostock Hamburg Communicating the attractiveness of Germany’s diversified research landscape Bremen Berlin Hanover Münster Magdeburg Dortmund Göttingen Leipzig (Research) Universities Cologne Dresden Jena Aachen Bonn Marburg Max Planck Institutes Frankfurt Fraunhofer Institutes Bayreuth Saarbrücken Why is this campaign necessary? As most of you know very well, the German research landscape is quite diverse. There are several actors, chief among them universities and a range of different non-university research institutions. Round about 90 research universities, 80 Max Planck institutes, almost 20 Helmholtz Centres, and Fraunhofer and Leibniz also have in between 80 and 90 research locations each. And as you can see on this map, these actors are strongly decentralised. To the outside world this can sometimes look rather confusing. Communicating the attractiveness and the strengths of this model is a large part of what the initiative does. 16 The Collaborative Project “International Research Marketing“
Research Alumni Mobility and Web DAAD DFG Fraunhofer AvH Proximity to Industry In the collaborative project “International Research Marketing” several partners are involved: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Has launched several press and PR activities, such as the website Has initiated social media tools, such as webinars, and publishes newsletters and publications on Germany to promote Germany as a centre of research. The DAAD furthermore organizes press tours for journalists and gives presentations on research opportunities in Germany at International Career Fairs. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Has launched an International Research Marketing Ideas Competition to support independent research marketing activities by German universities and research institutions Is present at international specialist conferences to promote Germany as a location for research in specific fields Organizes Topic-based workshops and a forum for the exchange of relevant professional knowledge in the area of research marketing Develops information products for specific subject areas and target groups The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft Has launched several initiatives to link industry sectors with the German high-tech and innovation strategy (expl: InnoMine Chile, InnoHealth Australia). I’ll be focusing on the activities of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation with “Research Alumni” of German universities and institutions, which build on the Foundation’s expertise in supporting and building a worldwide network of more than 28,000 scholars, scientists, and engineers in over 140 countries. What are research alumni, what roles can they play?: Research alumni are scholars, scientists and engineers who have carried out research in Germany or been involved in research collaborations with German institutions. Research alumni are: Ambassadors for German research Facilitators of connections between individual researchers and research networks Counselors about the value of international research collaboration and experience – and how to solve the problems that often go with international collaborations Role models for early career researchers planning their own careers, particularly those thinking about how to integrate international experience into their careers. Proximity to Research

18 Fostering research alumni work in Germany
Since 2011, the Humboldt Foundation has provided financial support for universities and research institutions to develop research alumni networks and strategies. We have also provided events for research alumni advisors. There are 36 institutions in Germany which were awarded for their research alumni strategy by the Humboldt Foundation. The Leibniz University of Hanover has received two awards since 2014 for their compelling concepts concerning research alumni activities. Most recently, in the 2016 contest, it was selected to organize today’s "Research Alumni Meeting Abroad" here in Glasgow. Places with institutions having a successful research alumni strategy:

20 Managing a Long-term Relationship:
Managing a Long-term Relationship: Things You Can Do as Research Alumni 1 Keep in touch with your German host institution 2 Talk about your experiences; be a role model 3 Use professional occasions to disseminate information (conferences, guest lectures etc.) So what can you do as research alumni of the Leibniz University of Hanover? First of all, keep in touch with your German host institution. And you being here at this event shows that you are interested in keeping this relationship alive. Furthermore, we would like to encourage you to talk about your experiences in Germany. It is important that you are a role model for other researchers in Britain who are interested in a research stay in Germany. Also, please use professional occasions such as conferences and guest lectures to disseminate information on Germany as a research location. Another good idea is also to keep informed about research funding opportunities in Germany on the relevant websites. Based on what we have learned through the competitions we organised and judging from our own experience, there are a few very simple things research alumni can do to realise the benefits I just mentioned: Alumni relations are never a one-way street. In this sense, we would like to encourage you to be proactive and to stay in touch with your host university once you have left Germany. I am sure the responsible people in Berlin will be more than happy to hear any ideas and suggestions on how to optimise alumni relations. Use the power of word-of-mouth: talk about your experiences in informal discussions with colleagues and students and point them towards resources like our Research in Germany website Talk about your experiences when you are presenting papers at conferences or giving guest lectures at other institutions Visit research-in-germany.de to find material such as PowerPoint slides and further hints and tips 4 Keep abreast of research and research funding opportunities in Germany at  Campaigns & Activities  Research Alumni or: Seiten 20
