2 BEING A GOOD PERFORMER PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: HOW TO REHEARSE:
KS3 PERFORMANCE SKILLS BEING A GOOD PERFORMER At many times in the year (for example Christmas) the music department is focussed on developing pieces for performance and band skills. As part of this students will be learning in groups how to prepare a piece for showcase. Through this you can improve your group work skills, listening, focus and instrumental ability. PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES: Practice with determination. Surround yourself with a good team. Be organised (have you got everything you need to rehearse?) Be encouraging of each other. HOW TO REHEARSE: Preparation - Make sure you have everything you need. Equipment, worksheets etc. Small Chunks - Break the piece down into smaller manageable chunks that you then put together Targets - Have a clear idea of what you want to achieve this session. Slowly - Start slowly then speed up as you get more confident. Listen - Listen to your piece in between so you know it inside out.

3 GARAGEBAND FOR KS3 LOOPS VS. MIDI
Loops are pre-recorded, repeated sounds created by virtual instruments. MIDI is short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It basically means you can record voice or instrument through a USB. You can add the loops by clicking and dragging them into the middle area. It is good to start a project with a drum loop as this will help keep your piece in time and at the right tempo. SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT Once you have selected software instrument you can choose to play multiple virtual instruments through a keyboard. Select an instrument sound and then press record. ADDING A NEW TRACK To add a new track press the plus button and select from one of the options then click create. More than likely you will select software instrument unless we are doing something special. VOLUME The volume on each track can be adjusted so that you can hear each part clearly. You can also Mute and Solo each track. STOP PLAY RECORD Students can use Garageband on the Macs at school and if they have access to a mac, iphone or ipad at home then you can also download garageband PAN Pan changes the position of the sound in the speakers. At KS3 we leave this in the middle.

4 WAYS TO LISTEN LISTENING: 10 x 2
KS3 LISTENING TO MUSIC WAYS TO LISTEN In music at KS3 you will develop your listening skills and broaden your musical appreciation hearing a variety of styles and artists to help you develop your own personal musical taste. Music is meant to trigger reactions, invite reflections, awaken feelings, activate memories and touch the heart, you may not like everything we listen to but all I ask if you listen with maturity and form an opinion you can explain. LISTENING: 10 x 2 ASK YOURSELF QUESTIONS: How does this music make you feel? What is your favourite part of the piece? What instrument is the most dominant? What instruments can you hear playing? Does this piece remind you of any others you have heard? What style of music is this and how do you know? What was the mood of the piece? How would you describe the tempo? What is the structure of the song? What is the message of the song? Why do you think the composer wrote this song? What do you like about this song? How would you describe the singers voice? Listen to a piece of music quietly. Let your ears wander and take in as much as possible. List 10 words or phrases about any aspect of what you hear. Repeat Steps 1 & 2: Listen again and try to list 10 more words or phrases to your list. I HEAR/ I THINK/ I WONDER What do you hear? What do you think about that? What does it make you wonder?
