2 principles of the experiments
Substances Indicator (reagent) Name of experiments Carbohydrates (Monosaccharides) Benedicts reagent Benedicts test Starch (Polysaccharides) iodine/potassium iodide Iodine Test lipids Sudan IV ethanol (an organic solvent) Emulsion Test For Lipids protein biuret reagent Biuret test tyrosine amino acid Folin's reagent Folin's test plasma protein benzidine Benzidine test hemoglobin Drabkin’s reagent Spectrophotometric

3 principles of the experiments
Test Principle Benedicts test The reagent contains blue copper (II) ions. In the presence of a reducing sugar these are reduced to red copper (I) ions. These form a precipitate which is insoluble in water. Sudan IV Sudan IV is not soluble in water; it is, however, soluble in lipids. Sudan IV is added to a solution to dissolve any possible lipids. Biuret test Under alkaline conditions substances containing two or more peptide bonds form a purple complex with copper salts in the reagent.
