1 Business studies – a framework for 12bus
Learning Objective: To identify the key questions a business asks when running a business. Next level: To start thinking of the impact of businesses on the world.

2 You can look at a story through different lenses
Picture This: “You are at a restaurant. It is quite busy, people are ordering food and the chefs are preparing the food. The waiters and waitresses are serving the customers.”

3 With this field, take the restaurant in our story and think:
Different aspects of human life are looking at this restaurant in different ways. Each group will have a card with a different field of human life from the other groups. With this field, take the restaurant in our story and think: What things might you be looking for in the restaurant if you were looking at the restaurant through the lens of the field you have been given? (For example, if you were looking at the restaurant with a Maths lens, what would you look for?) What questions might you ask if you were investigating this restaurant with your given field? Have one group take one of the following fields: Languages, Maths, Science, Design & Architecture, Food & Nutrition, The Arts, Psychology, Law, Exercise Science, History. Get groups to give feedback on questions they would ask.

4 WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR IF WE ARE LOOKING AT THINGS FROM A…
BUSINESS STUDIES PERSPECTIVE?

5 Think, Pair, Share exercise
What is a business? Think, Pair, Share exercise “What is a business?” Not-for-Profits, Charitable organisations, NGO’s, Schools, Terrorist Groups, could they be classified as businesses? . Next slide; A business is a life force

6 A business is a lifeforce
A business is a lifeforce, just like any living creature. A business is created with a purpose (Pūtake) It is influenced by the world around it, and can influence others in the world. It is ever-changing It is created to add value to this world. A business is a life force

7 Debate I will make a statement. You need to decide to what level you agree or disagree (10 = strongly agree, 1 = strongly disagree). After 1-2 minutes of evaluating, you will find 1-2 other people who have a similar rating to you (a difference of 2 points either way is fine). Share your ideas. You will then position yourself in the room based on what you believe. We will then go back and forward giving reasons why we agree or disagree. If you feel compelled to move to the other side, you can move to the other side. You can only make a statement if you are on one side or the other – if you are in the middle, you cannot talk. A business is a life force

8 “The biggest changes in the world are created by businesses.”
Debate statement “The biggest changes in the world are created by businesses.” A business is a life force
