2 The paper aims … i. to report on how YouTube helps undergraduate students to complete their assignments ii. to share the challenges faced by them in using YouTube. 2019

3 How humans access and gain information, knowledge and other skills are greatly influenced by the technological developments (Salavati, 2016). The digital age has integrated the digital technology in learning process (Ifenthaler & Tracey, 2016). Students are able to gather knowledge and skills in the blink of eye because of the connection of the internet and technologies as it become the secondary library for them (Latt, 2012). 2019

4 It provides an interactive way to the students to learn.
One of the tools that frequently used by the students in e-learning is the YouTube. YouTube allows teachers to incorporate audio and video in teaching and learning process (Comac, 2008). It provides an interactive way to the students to learn. Plays a“pivotal role in practicing the target language and its pragmatics, engaging students in active and productive projects, preparing them for likely future encounters in computer-mediated communication, learning more about other cultures and preparing them for becoming autonomous learners” (Nejati, 2010; Lord, 2009). 2019

5 It “offers fast and fun access to language and culture-based videos and instruction from all over the globe” (Terantino, 2011, p. 11). Owens & Franlinger (2009), YouTube is no longer a medium of entertainment only but it has become one of the medium for learning. 2019

6 lack of studies to show the challenges faced by students when using YouTube to complete their assignments. Bonk (2008), although YouTube is a very attractive social medium that contributes to the global education, it stills has its own limitations and obstacles no matter how convenient it is to the students and educators. 2019

7 Being an autonomous learner, it is a very important for them to develop their personality. There were so many questions arise regarding the capability of YouTube in assisting students becoming an autonomous learners. Hence, this study can better understand students to develop solutions for better use of the You Tube 2019

8 METHODOLOGY This study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches in data collection. The sample of this study comprised 60 students from year 1 to year 3 doing a degree in English Language Studies at the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The instrument used in this research is a set of questionnaire and an interview schedule. 2019

Year One: R1:“It gives me extra points. I also learn how to use certain software…” R2: “…for more effective learning and clear understanding…” R3: “It helps me to understand the assignments that I am doing better…” Year Two: R4:“… we used it as additional references to complete our assignment” R5: “YouTube videos helps to explain about technical terms present in the assignment” R6: “By making me understand better I have more ideas to complete the assignments” Year Three: R7:“… to get more information regarding the assignment.” R8: “…it is very convenient and easy for me because the website is there.” R9: “I will watch the video that is related to the subject so I can understand the subject better.” 2019

17 CHALLENGES FACED Year One:
R1:“Video might be too long, poor internet connection” R2: “…no credible source…” R3: “…the reliability and the credibility of the video…” Year Two: R4:“…the distraction that we get…” R5: “…the amenities because we need to constantly connected and internet can be an issue on several places…” R6: “…the slang in the video…makes me confused” Year Three: R7:“Although, it was designed to be two-way communication platform, people can leave comment and other people can respond but I do not think they do all the time especially for the big channels.” R8: “…need an internet connection…” R9: “…the source in YouTube is either valid or invalid... We can’t really tell. 2019

18 Conclusion The findings of this study show that there are high number of positive responses among UKM ELS students in using YouTube to complete their assignment. It is also evident that Year 2 and Year 3 students share more positive responses as Year 1 students may not have started content courses that require the use of digital platforms for references. It could also mean the nature of assignments in Year 2 and Year 3 are more demanding where additional knowledge need to be sought. Another reason for this could be the instructors are guiding students to use ICT modes in learning. Being digital natives, the majority of the students in this study used smartphone to access YouTube. Students acknowledged that the use of YouTube is beneficial and worthwhile as it can be one of the essential learning tools to develop learning and teaching skills. 2019

19 It can be concluded that using YouTube can be implemented in classroom as one of the main components of blended-learning tools as majority of the students access the YouTube regularly. This must be done with proper guidance from the respective lecturers or instructors so that students are more focused when in need of You Tube resources as there can be danger of being distracted. 2019
