CCID used for everything Storage space Course registration Library access Do not share your CCID and password

8 Computing Labs Windows, Mac and Unix labs on campus
AICT maintains a web page with a list of labs and installed software at Must authenticate using secure shell (ssh) For Windows computers, this means PuTTY Icon on desktop labeled Authentication

9 Authenticating in Labs
Locate the icon labeled Authentication Double-click Enter your CCID as the username Enter your password Minimize the window – don’t close it until you are done! When finished, make sure you close it

10 Storage Space / Web Space
U of A provides students with 1G of storage HUCO students also have HUCO space Used to store files

11 Why Use the Storage Space?
Accessible anywhere Secure Backed up regularly Can be used to backup local files

12 Setting Up Web Space Setting appropriate permissions
Creating needed files Not expected to understand commands used AICT maintains a page of instructions at etup.html We’ll do it now!

13 Connect to GPU Using SSH
Most people do not use secure shell (SSH) access often AICT instructions at loggingon.html

14 PuTTY Connection Open PuTTY Choose GPU in list
Icon on desktop or University of Alberta 2004 folder Choose GPU in list If not there, enter in Host Name field and select SSH Click Open Enter CCID and password when prompted

15 Commands (Order Matters!)
Create directory for web pages mkdir public_html Set access for all directories fs setacl . webservers l Set access for web pages fs setacl public_html webservers rl Exit the terminal session exit Done!

16 Using the Web Space Anything placed in public_html is available on the Internet Address will be Can create additional folders Name the main file in each folder index.html File is served by default Avoid spaces and special characters in file and folder names

17 Uploading Content Secure copy (scp) and secure ftp (sftp) most common methods WinSCP is installed in the labs FileZilla is another alternative Cyberduck on Macs See for details and instructions

18 Alternative Transfer Methods
OpenAFS allows you to map a drive letter Samba allows you to map a drive letter See for details and instructions

19 ONEcard Printing ONEcard is used for printing, photocopying and payment at various locations on campus – see Printer in SLIS computer lab Photocopiers in Rutherford Library Cheap photocopying at GSA office in Triffo Hall – cash only
