1 Diseases Caused by Bacteria and Viruses
Chapter 20 Section 3

2 In this section… How do bacteria cause disease?
How do viruses cause diseases? Why are emerging diseases particularly threatening to human health?

3 General Definitions Pathogens-disease causing agents
Vaccine-a preparation of weakened or killed pathogens Antibiotic-drugs that block the reproduction and growth of bacteria. Emerging Disease-a first time disease seen in a population, or a disease that become harder to treat. Prion-a protein that can cause neurological damage.

4 Disease Mechanisms Two ways Damaging tissue Releasing Chemicals

5 Host Tissue Damage Like TB-Tuberculosis
Pathogen is inhaled and triggers an immune system response Begins damaging tissue

6 Releasing Toxins Like the bacteria that causes diphtheria
Deadly Food Poising

7 Controlling Bacteria Physical Removal Disinfectants Food Storage
Food Processing Sterilization by heat

8 Preventing a Bacterial disease
Use of a vaccine Edward Jenner Video contributions-quiz.html

9 Preventing Disease Vaccines Antibiotics

10 Viral Diseases Viruses cause disease by directly destroying living cells or affecting cellular processes, upsetting homeostasis.

11 Preventing Viral Diseases
Prevention: Vaccines Personal Hygiene

12 Treating Viral Diseases
Antibiotics don’t work Antiviral Drugs

13 Emerging Diseases These pathogens can have a huge affect on humans…we haven’t built up a resistance yet, and have no way to control them. Superbugs New Viruses

14 Prions Clumps of proteins that cause problems.
Means protein infections particle Affect humans and animals.
