4 Importance of the SATS tests
SATs tests - National Tests are set by the Government as a tool of measuring the progress of children from KS1 to KS2 in the core subjects . A Reading comprehension, Spelling test , Punctuation and Grammar tests and 3 Mathematics tests. The results of these tests are then sent electronically on to secondary schools and are also published in league tables which the Government & Ofsted use to measure the success of a school. They will be on your child’s end of term report along with a teacher assessment which reflects your child’s attainment in the classroom on a day to day basis. SATs results will be sent to school on Tuesday 9th July. Testing 2014 national curriculum over the last four years- The children have worked hard at Amherst and the SATs results should reflect this. More challenging than previous years JP

5 Results from SATS Scaled score in the SATS tests with a score of 100 representing the expected level. Language used Maths – working at the expected standard Reading - working at the expected standard Writing - is teacher assessed, no test Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) - working at the expected standard TB

6 Teacher assessment- submitted before the SATs results are published
Writing Reading and mathematics Growing development of the expected standard in writing This has been changed this year and the teacher assessment frameworks have been removed Working towards the expected standard in writing Working at the expected standard in writing Science Working at greater depth within the expected standard Working at the expected standard JP

7 Reading test Comprehension paper - Three different texts will be provided which progress in difficulty, each accompanied with approximately 37 questions to assess comprehension skills. The texts will be a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. Out of a total of 50 marks. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ TB

8 Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG)
Grammar & Punctuation test A short-answer paper with approximately 49 questions lasting 45 minutes; Out of 50 marks. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions: Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’ Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’ Spelling test 20 words read as dictation in individual sentences lasting approx. 15 mins; out of 20 marks SC

9 Maths SATs tests: Arithmetic paper 1: (approx. 36 questions testing calculation skills lasting for 30 minutes; out of 40 marks) Reasoning papers 2 & 3 (approximately 20 questions in each paper lasting 40 minutes; out of 35 marks) Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: Multiple choice, True or false, Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart, Multi-step problems, Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem Generally we feel that the children work well in maths and our results reflect this. The MA books are a very good way of continuing to keep all the maths topics current at all times. Our concerns with the maths are children not showing their workings out properly, not checking the paper thoroughly and not reading the questions carefully enough. SC

10 Writing No test- all assessed based on children’s books from classwork. Spelling and punctuation is now a bigger focus when assessing writing Spelling mistakes must be corrected independently- therefore marking has been adapted to allow pupils to achieve this Criteria for expected and greater depth writing has been shared with the children and targets for writing based on these JP

12 Important information
In order to support your child throughout the tests and help them to do their best, please ensure that your child: gets to bed at a reasonable time; comes to school having had breakfast; is well organised with the correct equipment and is as calm and focused as possible. Children will need: an ink pen and cartridges or handwriting pen, HB pencils, a rubber, a long ruler with cm/mm and a protractor. Obviously it is important that your child attends school every day during SATs week. If your child is unwell on any of the test days, please telephone the school. Children have up to five days to take the tests due to illness. Please note that if your child is unavoidably absent, they will not obtain an end of ‘Key Stage’ National Curriculum score in the test they miss. JP
