1 Attributes of a Scholar
The attributes listed on the next two slides illustrate one publisher’s definition of a scholar. Your school may want to adopt these or some others for use schoolwide. A Google search will yield many other choices.

2 Attributes of a Scholar
Academic Humility: Scholars still don’t know everything.  True scholars consider themselves half-empty.  Scholars seek knowledge. Curiosity: Scholars are always wondering how it works, feels, operates, etc.  Scholars read to learn new information and to discuss. Tools: Scholars have their materials and are prepared mentally and physically with whatever is needed to learn. Multiple Perspectives: Scholars look outside their own realm or box and see how others see things.  Scholars understand that you don’t have to agree to understand other perspectives.

Save: Scholars save ideas, thoughts and reflections Ponder: Scholars know that quality thoughts take quality time. Exercise Intellect: Scholars challenge their minds and constantly force their minds to grow.  Scholars do things outside their fields to keep themselves challenged Resources: Scholars know that many varied resources are needed.  Vision/Goals: Scholars blaze the trail and pave the road.  Scholars understand that if there is no path, there is no vision.

4 Getting started… Post the attributes in your classroom.
When students are working, conversing, or responding to questions, identify the attribute they are using. Examples: “Marian, you are demonstrating the behavior of a scholar by taking time to ponder the question before you answered.” “Javier, you are demonstrating the behavior of a scholar by using your calculator to solve that complex equation. You not only came prepared with the right tools, but you showed that you know which resources to rely on for the work we’re doing.”

5 More ideas to get you started…
Have students identify the attributes in each other. Have them identify the attributes they are using themselves. Students must develop the language of a scholar, and they must consistently use the language of a scholar.
