3 The SAT Suite of Assessments
Three years ago, when we announced the redesign of the SAT, we also announced a partnership with Khan Academy, the world leader in free, online education, to level the playing field by offering the first-ever free, personalized SAT practice for all. We also redesigned the PSAT/NMSQT and created the PSAT 10 and 8/9; a full suite of tests that work together to measure student progress over time as they work to get ready for college and career.

4 Introduction to Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy
Free personalized study plan for students: satpractice.org Free resources for educators: satpractice.org/k12 Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy Three years ago the College Board partnered with Khan Academy with the mission to level the playing field by offering the first-ever free, personalized SAT practice for all. We embarked on this partnership because we’re excited about the new SAT and how it gives students the opportunity to show their best work. And it was important to us that we made something so good that even families who could pay for expensive test prep would choose the freely available option. With Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy students can access high-quality materials that not only help them build their confidence for test day, but also teaches them core skills needed for college and their career – not the least of which is the importance of practice. The system offers students thousands of real SAT questions - written by the same people that right test- interactive lessons, full exams and more. Through our partnership with Khan Academy, its now easier than ever for students to show their best work on the SAT. A couple of links I want to point out to you – satpractice.org is where students can go to get started. You all should go as well and take a look at what it looks like!

5 Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy
Facilitator: Let’s quickly review the path to student success: Students link accounts so that Khan can use CB test data to provide personalized practice Students access official practice tests on Khan OR through the app! Use the app to get instant scoring, which will update and further enhance the personalization of OSP on Khan Academy as students continue to practice

6 Students Answer the Call
5 million unique users 2 million linked accounts Official SAT Practice 46% test takers report using Official SAT Practice 3 times more students using Official SAT Practice than commercial test prep So far, we’re incredibly excited that students have answered the call to practice. Almost half of the students from the class of 2017 who practiced for the SAT used Official SAT Practice, which is more than three time those who used commercial test prep. And, as of just a few months ago, I’m proud to share that we’ve reach the 5 million mark – that’s 5 million unique users who’ve signed up for Official SAT Practice since we launched in June of 2015. Students are not only seeing score gains if they put in practice time, we’re hearing from students that they feel more confident and prepared going into test day.

7 Based on 250,000 students from the Class of 2017
SAT Score Improvements and Official SAT® Practice Number of points gained from PSAT/NMSQT® to SAT correlated to hours spent practicing That’s backed up by evidence: Research completed earlier this year showed that students who spent 20 hours on Official SAT Practice gain an average of 115 points between the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT, nearly double the average score gain compared to students who don't use Khan Academy. Researchers further evaluated whether the findings held across different types of students and confirmed that practice advanced students regardless of gender, race, income, and high school GPA. We’re proud of the progress that we’re seeing. We’re also grateful to educators for their ingenuity and dedication in introducing Official SAT Practice in their schools and helping students take advantage of these opportunities. 8 Get Personalized Practice
How to Link Linking Powerpoint Presentation How to Troubleshoot Linking: Access College Board Scores No College Board scores? Don’t worry, start at Official SAT Practice by taking a diagnostic exam! Facilitator: So let’s begin now to review the basics of how to your get students onto Khan. This video will outline the 3 steps required to link. Note: Educators participating in the training will not be able to link their account; they don’t have test scores. But this video can walk them through the steps that students will need to take. Common Issues: 1) Khan Academy doesn’t know you’re 13 years old 2) You can link, but there are no scores – this means you need to remedy issues on the College Board side. CB doesn’t have ample information to match the student to his or her scores. Generally, you can remedy this by using the Score Matching Tool on the Score Portal, but -- Two Scenarios where you will have to call Customer Service: 1) If a student has more than 1 CB account 2) If a student gridded in their personal information incorrectly or differently than what is on their online account. For students who took a P/N, they should try the 3rd link: youtube video that walks through how to troubleshoot their CB accounts. This provides tips on how to do deal with common problems. If you get multiple questions about troubleshooting, offer a few tips for educators before they get started: Ask 2-3 students to come in and walk them through the linking process before you work with a full class All students must: have an address and know the password for their . Communicate this with parents and students. Students must be able to access their to confirm their account with Khan Academy Know their home address and zip code (if you can, print off official school rosters). Be 13 years old Only have one CB account. Try: creating a standard for all students to create their usernames (1st initial of firstname + lunch number) and password (1st initial of first name + 8 digit birthday) It does not matter whether you create a CB account first or a KA account first, but we recommend you keep all students together; have one student hooked up to a projector so everyone can follow-along.

9 The Dashboard Facilitator: show the screen shot of the dashboard or “go live” via Once linked, here’s the dashboard students come to. Review the 4 tabs at the top Dashboard - shows previous scores as well current skills level. The College Board data sharing agreement with Khan Academy ensures that no student information is stored permanently by Khan Academy. Practice - (screen shot and notes on next slide) Tips and Planning – includes information on content, format, scoring/subscores, how to use Khan, info and strategies for each section, time management strategies, strategies for prep. Full exams – Review – the “review” tab can be helpful for educators tracking student progress.

10 Practice If students click on “practice,” the student will see the most important topic for he/she to work on; in this case -right triangle word problems. Because of a combination of how likely a topic is to show up on the SAT, and prior student performance, this is the skill that the student has the most potential to improve on. You’ll also notice a couple of other potential options for skills to work on, because Khan Academy has learned that if you only give the student one option there is some chance that they reject it and then check out. Instead, better to give other skills options (in this case solving quadratic equations and quadratic and exponential word problems) so that they have somewhere else to go. There’s also a full library of skills lower down on this screen for students who know exactly what they want to work on. Note: if you are “going live” in your training and want to display this screen in your educator account, you’ll need to take the 4 diagnostic quizzes because you do not have any test scores linked.

11 Turnitin’s Scoring Engine is integrated with Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy. It scores student essays written on actual SAT prompts, using the official scoring rubrics developed by the College Board.  After students finish the necessary practice exam sections, they can submit an optional essay to the scoring engine for instant scoring. The score students receive will give them a sense of how they might score when they sit for the real SAT. In addition, a new feature has been added. It gives targeted, line-by-line feedback on student essay writing. This new feature allows students to practice their essays in an untimed environment and receive detailed, real-time feedback from an official service approved by the College Board. The system uses the same evaluation criteria as the real test, but they won’t receive a score for these essays like they do for the timed practice test essays within the full-length practice tests.

12 Text is highlighted according to the type of feedback and signals are found in the right margin of the text. Students can click on a signal to see what feedback is provided. They’ll see a green check or a red flag to indicate whether or not they are on track.
